[Hidden-tech] Synchronizing computers

I keep my all of my email and other essential data sets (financial,
password managers, current word processing & spreadsheet files, etc.)
fully synchronized between my working desktop, a backup desktop and two
notebook computers (which I take with me for different purposes).

Although I have several programs that provide automatic backup and/or
synchronization, I prefer to do so manually, if only because I don't
want any errors I make on the current working machine propagated before
I have had a chance to fix them or restore to a good version from one of
the mirrors. Once the procedures are set up, it only takes seconds.

I use a very flexible file & directory comparison program called Beyond
Compare ($30 from Scooter Software, http://www.scootersoftware.com/)
which allows me to set up sessions to compare and synchronize between
any directories on any computers on my network, or even by ftp, on
remote computers.

To make this really easy, I keep all data that I want to mirror in a
single data directory tree (e.g., C:\Data\...) Although I use Mozilla
for email, I do use Outlook as a PIM and keep it synchronized this way
between computers. You need to move your Outlook folders to a directory
in the Data tree, then when you open Outlook and it complains that it
can't find them, navigate to where you have place them and open them.
From that point on, it should remember the new settings. Do this on
each computer.
