Hi Amy, Try searching the hard drive using the file name or parts of the file name. You may find a temporary file hanging out somewhere. In addition, turn on the Windows option to see hidden files and look for a temporary file in the directory where the original file is located or in any temporary directories you can find by searching the hard drive. Temporary files often do not have file names that match the original file. You might even try searching for a unique text string in all files on your hard drive. That could take several hours. Start it before going to sleep. Several times a day, I rename the file I am working on with a sequential suffix: 001, then 002, then 003. That way if I corrupt the file or overwrite it or somehow lose it, I have never lost more than a couple of hours worth of work. Since I do not delete these versions until the project is complete, I am able to go back and recover older text that I might have deleted thinking it was junk. You will discover several advantages to this sequential numbering process if you try it. Every day, week, or every few months (depending upon importance of the documents I am working on), I copy documents or entire directories to another computer on my network. Every now and then, but not often enough, I copy important stuff to a CD and give it to my sister for off-site storage in case the whole house burns down. Hi all, My daughter hit "replace" by accident and obliterated her first novella. It was about 80 pages double-spaced. I took it to ACI in Amherst and they couldn't locate it with a scan even though we had backed this up every five minutes or more within an hour during an editing session. Does anyone know if there are services that can take content off of a hard drive? If so, do you know the cost? Will the procedure destroy the hard drive? thanks!
