[Hidden-tech] Transporting large files

Hi Ann,

I've used YouSentIt (http://www.yousendit.com/) quite a bit in the past and have uploaded pretty large video files (200mb) for tv spots without a problem. If you don't want to have to go through the hassle of setting up FTP logins for your clients just now, this could be a good starting solution. And it's free.

I also have an FTP I set up on my web server where I place source files and swap files with my contractors and some clients (depending on the project). These are pretty easy to set up once you have a web site hosting account and usually the web hosting company's control panel has pretty good documentation on working with FTP accounts. www.globat.com is a pretty good hosting service that I use for some sites.

You might want to check www.download.com for some other FTP programs for the Mac also.

Good luck goin' freelance!

Paul

I'm going to assume that you will need to send files to both mac and pc users, and for that you should get a free .gz (gzip) compression tool to allow you to reduce file sizes.

you can find the Gzip executable for Mac here: http://persephone.cps.unizar.es/general/gente/spd/gzip/

As far as an ftp/sftp client to allow you to do this on a mac, I would recommend http://cyberduck.ch/ for a freeware option. There are plenty of freeware and shareware/retail options, but hey, open source is taking the world by storm, and there are many open source/freeware options that are great. I would take it that cyberduck's google PR 7 would lend some credence to it being a solid option.

Hope this helps, and does anyone else have some solid recommendations for Ann?

  Fred

    Hi all,

I am a graphic designer and production artist, new to Hidden-Tech and trying to make a go of freelance. I would like to learn about transporting large files via FTP. Can anyone out there give me some direction as to how it works and what I would need to do to set it up on my Mac?

Thanks very much for any feedback,

    Ann
