Bethany,

To my knowledge, there is no "licensing" for software engineers per se, just the various certifications out there.

Professional iability insurance might not be a bad idea to get, but it can be expensive. There's a good company I get a lot of my insurance from called Bell & Hudson in Belchertown. They can certainly help you out if you are curious to at least get a quote.
