If the original user has upgraded their version, wouldn't they have been required to uninstall the old one? And would that old one be eligible for re-registering (for support)?

  If you don't need the latest versions, you can get decent price breaks on ebay for the full retail version. Or, people are selling the educational versions at lower prices, which I believe have complete documentation.
