[Hidden-tech] External Drive ?

Dear tethered and wired colleagues-

I am an avid collector of music (first vinyl, then CD, now AIFF and  
MP3).

2 months ago I purchased a La Cie 500 meg external hard drive to  
store the incoming digital downloads.

(I'm running Mac OS 10.4.1)

Two months of bliss.  Plenty of room.  Easily integrated with the  
OS...plug and play to AirTunes on my stereo...

Then the honeymoon period ended.

First sign of trouble:  the external is not seen in the finder of my  
Mac.  Meaning, of course, that I cannot save to this disc any longer.

Second sign of trouble:  after saving to my onboard (Mac Powerbook  
15) drive, I cannot copy to the external LaCie.

Third sign of trouble: now, whenever I attempt to open a folder  
within the external (rock and pop - for example - which has more than  
1500 folders albums in it) I'm faced with the pinwheel of death...

How did such a good drive go so bad so quickly?

P.S.  The upgrade to Tiger appears to be coincidental:  I noticed the  
problem (no drive showing up on desktop) while still using Panther  
and thought: "Sure.  I'll install a new OS and that little problem  
will vaporize."  Nope.  It got worse....
