[Hidden-tech] Re: Query on podcasts

We don't Podcast yet, but we're preparing to. We're Ostrich Farm, a
band based in Ashfield. We plan to Podcast in order to promote our
latest CD, as well as our site, birdwaves.com. We have a project
studio up here that we've been recording in for about 5 years.

Why is Podcasting so popular now? A couple things as I see it:
1. Ease of use. The phenomenon has taken off not just because of the
iPod, but especially since Apple added it to iTunes. Until then it
was doable, but you had to figure it out. Now you can "easily"
subscribe to Podcasts and have then automatically upload to the iPod
when new ones are available.

2. Varied programming. There are literally thousands of Podcasts, of
every interest.

3. On demand. I like to be able to listen to my favorite programs
when I travel about the county. Also, reception is terrible in the
hills, so there are some shows I couldn't get otherwise.

4. The death of Radio. Programming is so terrible now it's a
disgrace. Playlists are about 5 songs in rotation. I can't take it, I
need real music, and real content. Even the college stations are a
mere shadow of what they once were.

5. It's free. (The podcast part, not the iPod part) Satellite radio
has promise, but monthly subscription fees scare me.

Now the trick for entering the fray as a podcast producer is more
complicated. It's not like it was even a few months ago. Now, there's
so many podcasts, how do you stand out and be noticed? There's about
50 "Dawn and Drew Show" copycats alone. In that sense it's starting
to mirror traditional Media outlets.

Thats my Two Cents

Thanks,
