But Rikk is right that the variables of media type, brand etc, software players (and authoring software before that), hardware/drives, and physical condition all make for a hard nut to crack. Very often I see 1-off DVDs that were not authored properly or at all, which may have been done intentionally as a convenient way to park or backup some data, and intended to be used internally on systems that could read and write without issue.

But more and more often I encounter situations where the disk is not recognized or readable, so no way to access or extract the data. There may be data recovery processes or services that could work in some cases, but the variables are so many that I haven't delved into it very deep. And beware of RW discs, which appear as blanks to be overwritten. Sorry I can't help much beyond that...

Steve Unkles, Production Manager
Audio-Visual Archives
Media Production and Preservation
www.MakeHistory.tv

been a problem since the inception of DVD-R. It all comes
down to 1. Quality media, 2. Quality authoring. Since you
already have the DVD-R and it is from a quality source, then
how you author the disc is your biggest concern. If you
create it with one of the low-cost software factories, you
