Good point. If your DNS is the same company that you are moving away
from and you're not hosting your website with them, then it's
possible that they won't continue your DNS and your nameservers will
change to the default nameservers of the company you are moving to.
If that's the case, you should probably ask for help from someone
knowledgeable.
Oh god yes!

At $15/mo, [GoDaddy is]

I think that's for bulk users. Two different sites report their .com
price at $20.17 now (you don't find that out until you're well into
the registration process, disgusting). I do agree that they are
probably good for bulk users. WHMCS has a very good deal with Enom,
$10.59 for .com. They charge some for credit card/paypal but you can
also send them a check for no surcharge. Bad news is Enom is still
charging for whois protection.
Yes, to have a website you need web hosting and a domain
name, which you can get separately or a lot of companies
offer both. There are lots of registrars, some good ones

I don't recommend GoDaddy, they are expensive and they
nickel and dime you, and I disapprove of their tactic of
saying "Starting at" and quoting a low price without letting
you know that the next year it's going to jump up by a lot.
Very slimy. The one benefit is that they have basic domain
protection (whois protection) to keep your information
private, but a lot of companies are offering that now.
