These make sure your system stays on during power outages and brownouts.<div>-As a NAS runs its own operating system, it also comes with its own security vulnerabilities. It doesn't matter as much if you have it completely contained in your home network, but it matters a lot when you have it set up so you can access it from outside your network.</div><div>-With spinning platter hard drives (the cheaper old-school drives), the size does affect the reliability as bigger ones spin slowly, leading to less wear and tear, but these consume a lot of electricity. With new SSD, solid-state drives, the size doesn't matter as much. These are extremely reliable, have no moving parts, and consumes much less power. +1 for BSD-based system. If you've got some unix savvy, it's relatively <br>
easy to set up FreeBSD with ZFS in various RAID configs. It's also great <br>
for running your own local services if you want to get more out of your <br>

Hi Kimo, again I recommend learning just a bit about ZFS - how it is <br>
considered by many the ultimate file system with origins in Sun <br>
Microsystems but still being actively developed and refined in the open <br>
source world. It is behind many commercial products.<br>
<br>
The ease and reliability of local snapshotting has saved my butt many <br>
times over.<br>
<br>
It also makes it relative simple to do a send | receive of block changes <br>
to a remote off-site server for backups. The operating systems with zfs <br>
support usually include rsync which further expands your options...<br>
<br>
ZFS is part of FreeBSD [underlying FreeNAS], and can also be implemented <br>
in Linux [although I cannot attest to its ruggedness there]<br>
<br>
IRC channels are great resources for ZFS support (and FreeBSD also).<br>

I've installed FreeBSD on a large variety of hardware and use zfs with <br>
it extensively ... FreeNAS (or NAS4Free) is there if one wants a more <br>
appliance-like experience...<br>

Last thing - exporting and importing of zfs pools means one can take, <br>
for example, a pair of mirrored disks making up a zpool - and move them <br>
to another piece of completely different hardware - do a zpool import - <br>
and bingo!, you're ready to roll!<br>
