I am trying to keep costs down but am willing to pay what I have to within reason to get this done properly. The QNAP unit I included a link to sells for $164. As I started reading on the drobo website it just seems like there is a whole world of external drive systems with many concepts that I am not familiar with. I do understand what you are saying when you say that it might be better to use more smaller drives rather than fewer larger drives. I had not previously thought about that. (Maybe I should get a four or five bay unit instead of a two bay unit, and get four 5tb drives or five 4tb drives instead of two 10tb drives. On the other hand, though, I would think that the more drives one has the more likely that one will go bad on any given day.) They are out of stock of the Drobo 5c on the manufacturer's website but I do see some similar models on ebay.<br><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:trebuchet ms,sans-serif">(You say you have 42 tb of data? Wow. I thought I had a lot of data. Not compared to you. Aha! That's an important distinction. Besides the pricing and plan issues,<br>
there's a technical issue. Most of the plans mentioned in this thread<br>
are on carriers that use the GSM cellular system, which is ubiquitous in Europe.<br>
Verizon uses the CDMA cellular system, which is primarily available only in the<br>
US. In the popular tourist spots of Europe (London, Amsterdam, Berlin), <br>
some CDMA systems have been installed- so there is some access for<br>
a roaming Verizon phone, but it won't be as complete coverage as GSM.<br>
<br>
In the US, there are 4 carriers and 2 systems:<br>
AT&T GSM<br>
T-Mobile GSM<br>
Sprint CDMA<br>
Verison CDMA<br>
<br>
In Europe (and Asia except for Japan), all the different carriers use the GSM underlying system.<br>
<br>
And we're just talking about talking. The whole area of data services-<br>
2G, 3G, 4G, 4G-LTE, etc, etc, gets even more twisted.<br>
<br>
So whatever plan you choose, ask carefully about the coverage map<br>
and what data services are included.<br>

I download all of my photos to the Pictures directory on my Mac with OS<br>
Sierra installed. I do not manage my photos using the Photos app but opened<br>
it once to see if I might like to. I'm thinking it may have<br>
duplicated/imported several years of files when I did this? Today's<br>
notification that my hard drive is full prompted me to open Photos again to<br>
see what I can see. The Importing preference to copy items to the Photos<br>
library is off, but maybe I did that when I got my first notification that<br>
the hard drive is filling up. Photos Library in the Pictures directory is<br>
118 GB. How do I get rid of this without screwing things up? (Yes I have<br>
external drive backup.)<br>
<br>
I can't even send a message from my local email client, write a Word<br>
document, do anything!<br>

1) Make sure auto-backups is off, it creates backup images every hr/day/week<br>
And then remove the snapshots.<br>
<br>
2) If you are not using photo or iPhoto - and have backed up all your <br>
images, delete that directory or at least the older ones.<br>
They are often in directories in some way -- a Mac of ours has had <br>
similar issues - there are directories within the Pictures directory<br>
you can delete - be sure to delete without using trash<br>
<br>
plenty online about how to do both of these.<br>

The difference is that the trademark applies to "Soap Box" Derby. Because<br>
trademarks applications apply to exact words and marks, the space does<br>
matter.<br>
That said, one of the things that gets IP lawyers involved is when there is<br>
likelihood of confusion between trademarks. Using the phrase "Soapbox<br>
Derby" could make a reasonable person believe that the derby is affiliated<br>
with the "Soap Box Derby," a mark owned by International Soap Box Derby,<br>
Inc.<br>

Yeah. I think we're going to go with "Soapbox Races" for now. Seems <br>
safer, though I'd rather use something like "DIY Cart Derby" or anything <br>
simple that could catch on. I think the "Derby" part is more important. <br>

Hi folks,<br>

I want to purchase and set up a 10tb RAID1 external hard drive system. (So<br>
that would be two 10tb hard drives mirroring each other.) Someone<br>
suggested that I get a QNAP Tr-002 system (example:<br>

Does anyone know if that is a good system? It is less expensive to get two<br>
independent single 10tb external hard drives and use a mirroring function<br>
available as part of Windows 10 to mirror the two drives but someone<br>
advised me not to trust Windows 10 to do that. Also, I was thinking of<br>
getting SAS drives instead of NAS drives, but that is apparently a<br>
different types of system and I don't know much about that. Any thoughts<br>
on these things? Also, if I do get NAS drives, which ones are best?<br>

Personally I've picked bigger units (# of drives) and this is a more <br>
complex Q, whose ?<br>
I like Drobo,? while it is less standard technology, they allow adding <br>
drives (or replacing) as you go, of different sizes (usually getting bigger)<br>
and can even add another layer of duplication depending on number of drives.<br>
<br>
Bottom line, the bigger the drive, the worse the cost ($ and data) of <br>
loss potential.<br>
Since you didn't put a price on it or any sense of your in-house <br>
technology) - it's hard to advise more.<br>
Going beyond simple mirroring is usually worth the cost.<br>
<br>
Given that we have a number of personal computers and even local web/db <br>
servers used for projects.<br>
I much prefer NAS - that way you have much more flexibility and are not <br>
tied to a specific computer,<br>
THAT will crap out a some point -- using only Windows mirror I would <br>
totally avoid.<br>
<br>
Note: NAS drives is a reliability measure -- true NAS drives are for <br>
using in regular operations vs lower level drives that are mainly for <br>
backup and a good NAS unit will even turn the drives off when not used <br>
for some time period.<br>
<br>
Where as NAS device means it's on a local network - with if you have any <br>
connection and wifi you (probably) have even if you don't know it.<br>
<br>
