URL: From choogendyk at earthlink.net Sat Mar 16 19:40:11 2024 From: choogendyk at earthlink.net (Chris Hoogendyk) Date: Sat, 16 Mar 2024 15:40:11 -0400 Subject: [Hidden-tech] Amazon sellers product listing with GTIN exemption Message-ID: Hoping there is someone with some experience doing this who can offer some guidance. It's clear that Amazon Seller Support personnel are low paid workers who have automated tools for classifying questions and giving canned answers. I've been around this loop at least 10 times over the last month and can't seem to get a thinking person who can get out of the box and actually examine my case. I have a DVD with jpg and pdf files that contain scanned primary source historical documents related to my grandfather. The DVD has been catalogued by the UMass Amherst library and is listed in Worldcat with an OCLC number ? "2019: Hoogendyk, C.G. (ed. & producer). David Crockett Graham Historical Diaries. ? ?? ??? ?. CD for computer. OCLC 1098242149." However, to list on Amazon, you need an ISBN number or you have to apply for and be granted a "GTIN exemption." Steps are as follows: 1. Add a product and indicate that you don't have a product ID. If you do have a product ID, you have to pick a specific type of ID from a list, such as ISBN. OCLC is not an option, and seller SKU is not an option. 2. Apply for a GTIN exemption, in this case for BOOK for your seller name. 3. After receiving the exemption, go back and edit your draft. Again, apply for a GTIN exemption, this time for the subcategory ABIS_BOOK. 4. After receiving that exemption, go back and edit your draft again. This time it should fly. But, NO, it again says you need an ABIS_BOOK exemption. If you try to create a new listing instead of editing your draft, it starts over with the primary category, BOOK. 5. Ask Amazon for help by submitting a help request. 6. Get an answer back from a random Seller Support person (never the same) outlining the process for you and offering a video explaining the process. Sometimes, you will get someone who says they fixed it. In any case it is always back to step 1, repeat. An important aside to the above steps is that you are supposed to wait 24 hours after a GTIN exemption is approved before submitting a listing request, and it may take 12-24 hours to get the exemption, so we're talking several days to complete the sequence of steps. While it seems like BOOK is an odd choice for my product category, there doesn't seem to be any other major category that fits, and this is what Amazon automatically selects. And, when filling out the details, one of the options for "Binding" is "DVD-ROM". So that's the route I've been going. The subcategory "Book > Biographies & Memoirs > Historical > General" is what prompts the ABIS_BOOK GTIN exemption requirement. I have successfully listed a book that does have an ISBN, and I have successfully listed some bookmarks that I had printed at Collective Copies. The bookmarks required a GTIN exemption that was approved on the fly by the Amazon system and gave me no trouble at all. You can find out more about my grandfather by looking at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Crockett_Graham. There is much more that could be added to that page, but the requirements for secondary source information (not primary source) makes for a significant amount of work to do it correctly. I would gladly accept any magic advice on how to get this listing to work. -- Chris Hoogendyk ??? Amherst, MA Erd?s 4 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There's some detail in this post but I'm sure more can be learned elsewhere. * There's a chance that the media has deteriorated depending on age and storage conditions. * I believe the discs needed to be "Finalized" before being readable on a TV DVD player. * Region lock: US is Region 1. I assume that the TV station's burners specified this but problems could arise if not. A PC DVD drive should be able to cut through most of this (as long as the +/- format is correct.) If you don't have a visible VIDEO_TS folder then something definitely off. Can you see the burned region from a visual inspection of the disc? If you have disc burning software, it might go the extra mile to try to parse data that is on the disc that Finder/File Explorer would not. Handbrake (https://handbrake.fr/) reads DVD Video discs and will also transcode into a video file. It's free and might help you rule out some of the points above. Hope that helps.. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Not all are the same and not all devices handle all formats. ALSO: there are *region* codes, including region 0 (no/any region) for *video* content. Devices are *supposed* to handle Region 0, but some Region 1 (US) players won't play Region 0 [this is a bug]. *Linux* DVD players ignore the region code (Linux's Open Source players generally just "give the finger" to the Motion Picture Suits and get away with that since the suits lost the court battle involved). But Rikk is right that the variables of media type, brand etc, software players (and authoring software before that), hardware/drives, and physical condition all make for a hard nut to crack. Very often I see 1-off DVDs that were not authored properly or at all, which may have been done intentionally as a convenient way to park or backup some data, and intended to be used internally on systems that could read and write without issue. But more and more often I encounter situations where the disk is not recognized or readable, so no way to access or extract the data. There may be data recovery processes or services that could work in some cases, but the variables are so many that I haven't delved into it very deep. And beware of RW discs, which appear as blanks to be overwritten. Sorry I can't help much beyond that... Steve Unkles, Production Manager ??? Is anyone interested in any of these books? ? Effective C++ (3rd edition) by Meyers ? Effective DevOps by Daniels & Davis ? Programming Pearls by Bentley ? Site Reliability Engineering by Beyer, Jones, et. al ? Deep Learning by Ian Goodfellow, et. al ? The Art of Software Security Assessment by Dowd, et. al ? Clean Code by Martin ? Ansible: Up & Running (2nd edition) by Hochstein ? Design Patterns by Gamma, et. al ? Understanding Software by Max Kanat Alexander ? Peer Reviews in Software by Wiegers ? Pro Angular (1st edition) by Freeman Photo: https://p.mtlynch.io/-JGt4znpxZ2/free-books.jpg I?m pretty gentle on my books, so they?re all in pretty good shape. No markings or dog-eared pages. You can either pick them up from my covered porch in South Hadley, or we can work out a way for you to pay media mail postage, and I?ll mail to you the titles you want. If you?re interested in any of these books, mark your name in the spreadsheet and shoot me an email to work out pickup details: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tLFIacHxd6jGetdFrYRFSauKm7m9jqHPp60p1ylGl-k/edit?usp=sharing Selecting many books at once is highly encouraged, as I?m hoping to avoid arranging 12 separate pickups.
