without seeing emails from LinkedIn or other history I'd say sounds like a scan to me After doing some research It does sound like something they might do, so I'll get linkedin on the phone to confirm this a valid request from them. Make sure you have in your email account the sources of their validation emails so you get any validation codes they send.
