[Hidden-tech] Cutting the cable: Apple TV

The back of my AppleTV device doesn’t look quite the same as that (there is no optical audio out); but yes, the port is an Ethernet port. I should have known that. But with zero documentation and plug-and-play on WiFi, I had no expectation that Ethernet would be involved, and just didn’t recognize it.

Someone else asked if my soundbar has both HDMI in and out, and the answer is yes. I think this can be solved using HDMI, just wired differently from my current setup. What’s the current hive thinking: is HDMI ARC a must, or just a little sound enhancement?

The port on the AppleTV box looks more like a three-tiered wedding cake (mostly square but with two small tiers above it) than the “home plate” look of the optical out.

The square-ish port is probably optical audio and you need to get a fiber jumper to connect the AppleTV to your sound bar, assuming your sound bar has the same port.  Then you configure your AppleTV to use the optical audio port for output.

Seems like I’m a little late to the party, letting go of Spectrum TV in favor of AppleTV. Video is great, but I’m flummoxed at getting the audio to my external soundbar. HDMI takes everything to the monitor (LG), not a smart TV so I’ve got the AppleTV box. How do I get the audio to the sound bar? I don’t recognize the square-ish port that suggests a connector.
