I've been trying to get (more) work for so many years. Keep in mind, should you be any sort of creative (I'm a graphic designer, primarily, but more of a "jack of all trades" kind of digital creator, so to speak), freelancing could possibly hurt your chances of finding work in a company, should freelancing be your "supplemental", or in my case a way of gaining experience whilst sharpening/updating your skills. Too many companies seek someone who has worked in a design house, as if to say freelancers don't have any experience with customers/clientele. Personally, I've given up trying to find any semblance of freelance work. I've tried Fiverr, but then you're competing with literally designers of the world who would be willing to do the same exact work for much less (perhaps cost of living is much cheaper on their side of the planet??). I've tried finding mentors, I've asked people in the business (literally dog eat dog world in the creative side of business, when you'd think otherwise) who might as well just tell me to "google it". I honestly believed when I was younger the creative world was much more accepting and helpful and learned the exact opposite. Content creators of other sides of creativity (bakers, pastry chefs, crafters, etc) are much more helpful than digital designers. I might as well get the finger. This has been an ongoing battle for me for YEARS on top of the attempt at getting my foot in the door after I graduated back in 2008 (which I finally got one with Johnny Rockets, but that lasted 8 months thanks to the pandemic, which hurt many businesses). Sorry to sound so negative, but just want to be honest of what others could potentially experience. I've been attempting to steer youngins in a STEM path and away from digital creative fields, only due to the simple fact that it is so saturated and many of these jobs are also outsourced; and as aforementioned, you're competing with the planet, as opposed to others in your geographical area. I was told about this email group in hopes of gaining employment, and it didn't help me much, either, though I've volunteered bidding for a logo in the past, and have offered insight in other areas, so it's not a total "waste of time". Plus, I've contributed more in the past than I do today. I personally wish I was more helpful and wished I knew of areas in which freelancers could obtain more work, but as I stated, it depends on where you seek to find work. Again, speaking of my experience, not necessarily as a warning, but more of a "heads up: this could possibly happen". The advantage: you'll probably end up with a better product by steering the conversation. You have to make sure to save the transcript before exiting the call--and what you get will be VERY rough and need significant cleanup. In-Reply-To: References: <2cda2ab5-1eab-dbda-6ea8-7c36b1a0f01c@stakeholderscapital.com> Message-ID: Andrew; I think you are right that if a recording is made, one can get both a running transcription and listen to the recording itself. (Note, BTW, that Microsoft Teams probably has still more advanced function. Also, that Google has been working on ?speech to text? functions that seem to have a lot of promise.) Shel; Thanks for the suggestion that we look at this avenue. I?ve been following Zoom for some time, and looking for these functions. But didn?t realize they had come so far. And in a ?free? version. My interest is more from a ?hearing disability? perspective. As age-related hearing decline is a real issue for many of us. So I?m looking for improvements in the presentation of the ?live captioning? to augment what one already hears. Then of course keeping a transcription can be of value too. My guess is that the near future (a small number of coming years) will give us all some amazing new tools. Tools which will make both mild and severe hearing loss less consequential. I?ll be looking for further thoughts in this area. I pay them $16 a month and it is well worth it to me. Especially now that the free version cuts off conversations with no warning at 40 minutes even if there is only one other person in the room. But I can tell you that I've used the transcription feature many times. It is not intuitive, as you have to enable closed captioning, then click on full transcript then save the transcript every once in awhile so that you still have some of it if you lose your connection. This presentation is sponsored by *On Native Land*: Leverett Advocacy and Education Group, the group working on Indigenous history of Leverett as part of Leverett's 250th Anniersary. Warm Best, Lisa Hoag Firsting and Lasting: Writing Indians Out of Existence in New England Sponsored by On Native Land: ?Leverett Advocacy and Education Group A Zoom Presentation by Dr. Jean M. O'Brien Wednesday, September 14, 2022 | 7 pm Professor Jean O?Brien (White Earth Ojibwe) will discuss how local historians in New England, writing between 1820 and 1880, promoted the myth of Indian extinction, if they wrote about the Indigenous population at all. Local historians erased Indians from the record by focusing on ?firsting,? which refers to the practice of listing the firsts of the proud English (e.g. first born, first settlement) and then ?lasting,? in which local histories told of the tragic disappearance of the last members of the Indian population, who had not disappeared at all. Dr. O'Brien will describe how these patterns were perpetuated and how they inform our present day. During the discussion, presenters will read from the historical record (found in the Leverett Library and in Amherst?s Jones Library Special Collections), which demonstrates how western Massachusetts ?firsted" and "lasted" its Indigenous people and often "replaced" them with monuments. Message-ID: Hi, We need to build a mobile app to display various data (customized pages of text, audio recordings, images) for users logged into it. It doesn?t have to be super fancy, but professional and best practices is what we?d like to see ? not just something sold to us by one of those mobile app factories that looks like it?s just using whatever graphic system they created for ease of development and doesn?t use built in OS tools. We basically want to take a bunch of text and media we can store either on our website or another online database and have the app access it with a good UI for users to see or play it and chose from lists of other data to add more to their personal library. We don?t want to spend an arm and a leg, but don?t even know where to start - a local developer, something national? I don?t even really have a sense of pricing: We?ve had national developers approach us before, but have no idea if these guys are charging high rates that they charge big companies, naive small companies, etc. Really what I?m saying is clueless and not even clear if I know what I don?t know. Can anyone here help make me less stupid about this stuff? -Steve -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
