We?ve been in touch with two companies in the northeast that specialize in church audio/video, one never responded and the other didn?t feel comfortable with the installation needs since it?s a residential buildout vs. commercial. We?re anticipating a setup that would involve multiple PZT cameras and XLR microphones for picking up both voice and live music, a server, and something like Camstreamer that would allow anyone with a laptop to control the feeds. We want the main camera to hopefully have some ability to control the F-stop for a more cinematic capture/selective focus. We want it to be plug and play so any volunteer with basic tech proficiency could run the broadcasts. Any help or suggestions for someone to contact would be greatly appreciated. Standard captcha solutions score you based on how well you did at completing the challenge. If you get the answer right, you are allowed to submit the form. If you get it wrong, try again. Google's reCAPTCHA scores you based on how well you protect your privacy. If it can figure out who you are, it'll often let you through without any challenge at all, just clicking the checkbox. If it's just a little uncertain, it'll give you a quick challenge. If you've done well at protecting your privacy, it'll throw you an extremely time-consuming challenge, where you have to complete round after round of selecting images that fade in and out over many seconds (as you select them, they're replaced by another). I've spent as much as 5 minutes trying to solve these (and being gaslit, told my correct answers are wrong). It's the most inhumane captcha solution on the internet. You probably don't need it. If you are providing a major newsletter, and the spammers are specifically targeting your site, then you may need reCAPTCHA, because it's also the most resilient against this kind of targeted attack. However, most likely, there's no actual human looking at your site; they just set a bot to search for sites with forms and submit them automatically. That means the simplest deterrent will stop them. At https://wiki.hcoop.net, we have a simple textcha: It's just an additional field to submit on the form, which picks one of two questions: "What is the first name of the author of the GNU Manifesto?" and "What is the last name of the current Debian project leader?". They are both trivial to look up and are totally sufficient to stop the spam wiki edits that we were being hit by before. We've been using them for years without changing them (except when Debian elects a new leader). If you need a step up from that, or an external service you can just embed in a page, hcaptcha is decent. Just, please, not reCAPTCHA. Best, Stephen -- To respect your time, I try to write short, functional emails. Personally, I feel the way you expressed about reCAPTCHA, whereas if I can search something and get the answer on the first page, that's way easier for me. However, I think my overall point has been lost somewhat in the details. The more important point with the hcoop example is that we've had a static question for many years. Every time I edit the wiki, I put in one of the same answers ("Richard" or "Carter"). The people who were spamming us could easily set their bot to know those two specific answers, and be able to spam us again. But they never cared enough to do that. I'm even comfortable posting the answers here, publicly! What that all means is that you probably just need a tiny deterrent to be left alone. Certainly, malicious people and bots are likely to try and protect their identity. I also definitely agree that you need to do something to stop them! Spam in general is a big problem, and reCAPTCHA does work? The point I was trying to make is that it's a big over-reaction, with collateral damage. It's like setting up a gated community to stop a string of robberies, before locking your doors. In all likelihood, the criminal is just looking for easy targets, and will go elsewhere when you put up the slightest resistance. Something like "What is five plus two?" may be sufficient. Best, Stephen P.S. I apologize for the length of these emails. I am quite busy (starting a new job) and lack the time to write a short one. I also appreciate that the real bad guys here are the spammers. I wish we lived in a world where you didn't have to deal with this at all. -- To respect your time, I try to write short, functional emails. It punishes real users to prevent bots. I also see Shel?s point about having to Google to pass an alternative challenge feeling like a pretty negative user experience. A possible compromise would be a simple math problem (what is 7 + 4?). There are a number of services out there that provide random math problems for preventing form spam. In my experience, much like Stephen?s trivia question, while the bots could be programmed to answer math questions, spammers don?t seem to have gone to that length yet. Another tool is what?s referred to as a ?honeypot.? This is a field that?s added to the end of your form but isn?t visible to people. Spam bots will see the field in the code of your web page and fill it in (since they?re generally programmed to fill all available fields), but real people never will since they can?t see it on the page. Then, your form system just dumps any entry that has content in that field into your spam folder. Not all form services offer this as an option, but many do. I find that using these two strategies together eliminates 99.9% of form spam on even high traffic sites, all while minimizing inconvenience to real users. Just food for thought! If so, what do you feel its advantages and disadvantages are? I'm seriously considering starting a new newsletter on Substack, and while doing intensive research on it, I started to wonder why - since it's free and it allows one to import one's existing list - why I don't just switch my existing newsletter over to it and save money. One possible disadvantage would be that if I did that and Substack changed its business model, eliminating the free option, then I'd have to switch newsletter hosts again, something I've done at least twice before, with unfortunate results. Your thoughts? Several people whose stuff I read have made the switch, including liberal democracy optimist Robert Hubbell and former TreasurySecretary Robert Reich. From a publisher point of view, it offers the option of making it easy for your subscribers to fund you. In your case, I think a relatively high percentage, maybe as many as 25%, would convert to paying. Since I made the mistake of pursuing the cheapskate market in the early days of my list, my conversion rate would probably be very small, and not worth it to me. BUT having seen tech companies pull many rugs out from under their early adopters (anyone remember FBML, or Apple's brief support of clones?), I would worry as you do, Marcia, that you're suddenly forced to pay them and you won't know how much until it happens. I've been with GetResponse for probably about 20 years. But they were I think my third provider, and each switch cost me subscribers. If Substack allows you to port over your existing list without requiring subscribers to opt in again, it might be worth exploring. As of when Hubbell switched last year, they did not. With open rates so low ever since Google introduced the Promotions Folder, I worry that few readers will even see the need to switch. I hope you'll post your decision, and your reasoning, when you've made up your mind. Big cities are worse, of course, but even out here we're surrounded. Around here your best bet may be to rent a room or time in their den in someone's house or cabin in a dead cell zone (thinking Warwick, etc) with no close neighbors, that has Comcast cable and the owner agrees to turn off the wifi when you're there. Good luck and let us know what you find. If EMF is somewhat low, you could put metal screen over the windows and any other openings. Of course, you'd need to also screen over any outlets. My EHS clients have also had good experiences with Qlink products https://www.shopqlink.com/collections/q-link-nimbus-stratus-for-spaces Good Luck, Sam *Sam McClellan* ** *Itabix, Inc* ** *one place for all things **web*** ** *sam at itabix.com* ** *https://itabix.com* ** *Main - 413.587.4600* ** *Toll-free - 877-7ITABIX (877.748.2249) * On 1/27/2022 6:41 PM, Deborah Chandler via Hidden-discuss wrote: > Hi folks, > > In light of the fact that my EHS (ElectroHyperSensitivity) was already > a significant problem, and it has taken a?turn for the worse since the > deployment of the 5G C Band last week, I now need to find an alternate > place to do work. > > Do you know about any workspaces that fit the following criteria: > * Has an ethernet internet connection only, NO WIFI signal at all, NOT > near cell tower or 5G mini antennas > (I can check the address for nearby towers online, and would be > bringing my EMF meter?to check levels in the space) > * private and quiet, away from traffic > * fragrance-free, toxin-free > * has desk, chair, good view > * heated > * natural and/or incandescent lighting, no?fluorescent > * access to restroom, hot plate > * available by the day, or possible weekly or monthly commitment > * Within 30 minutes of South Hadley, MA > > Given that more and more people are experiencing EHS, I think it would > be a fantastic business idea to create a wifi-free coworking space. > Anyone wanting to discuss this further, please be in touch. > > If you'd like to learn more about EHS, this is a good site, > https://www.electrosensitivesociety.com/ > > And our group, MA for Safe Technology, https://www.ma4safetech.org/, > is a fantastic group for more local efforts. > > Thanks in advance for any and all leads on available workspace. > And feel free to reach out if you think YOU and/or loved ones have EHS. > > Best, > Deb > > _______________________________________________ > Hidden-discuss mailing list - home page:http://www.hidden-tech.net > Hidden-discuss at lists.hidden-tech.net > > You are receiving this because you are on the Hidden-Tech Discussion list. > If you would like to change your list preferences, Go to the Members > page on the Hidden Tech Web site. > http://www.hidden-tech.net/members -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
