Message-ID: Hello, Taking my first flight in a while on friday and looking to hire a ride to Bradley. I head Uber is a fair bit cheaper than Valley Transporter, and also heard VT is under new ownership and I'm not sure about them. I will need to be picked up in Florence at about 5:50 AM---I've never hired an Uber driver for such an ungodly time of day and am concerned about being stiffed. :-) Can anyone recommend a reliable driver (Uber or other)? thanks! On trips of more than a week, the cost of the room can be less than the daily cost of parking at one of the airport lots. I think you can leave it for as long as two or three weeks, depending on the hotel. You want one quite close to the airport. We've done this 3 times and one of those, we were at a Roadway Inn 8 or 10 miles away and the van stopped at every hotel along the way. It took about an hour. The first hotel we used (I don't remember the name, sorry--it was back in 2010) was within a couple of miles of the terminal and it worked out very well. Usually, we just leave our car at Parking Spot self-park for $6-7/day --but the park-ride-fly option is great for very early morning flights outbound or late-night arrivals, as well as if weather conditions make it unsafe to drive to BDL on the day. ? I work for the Collaborative for Educational Services, based in Northampton. The focus of my work is connecting qualified high school students with career-building internship experiences in the STEM fields. My students receive training and support in professional expectations and conduct and are never placed in internships unless they are ready to be successful and to contribute meaningfully to the workplace. I would like to let your members know of my programming and how they might become involved, if they would like to be. I am entering the recruitment phase for this coming spring and summer. High school students in my program can be significant contributors to small business workplaces that need additional person power but don't want to hire full-time benefitted employees. > ? > > On Tue, Feb 1, 2022 at 9:48 PM Rich at tnr via Hidden-discuss > wrote: > we've done that a few time, and there a number of hotels near the airport with shuttles you can confirm will get > you for an early flight when you checkin. It's way too big a topic to dive deep, but I have to emphasize that the digitizing process is most effectively dealt with using professional hardware. From playback, to processing (time base correction/stabilizing, chroma/noise filtering, de-interlacing--or not, etc) to digitizing, to encoding) you will benefit greatly from a clean hardware signal chain. The investment in all of that is generally not cost-effective, for most folks, but a good DIY choice in my opinion would be one of the Canopus AVDC units not made since about 2010, but come up on Ebay. These are Firewire units, so you may need to modify your computer--sorry. All of the processing happens in the box, and you capture a DV stream, which retains the interlacing and is an intraframe codec, ideal for editing. File sizes are ~12.5 GB/hr. You'll like want/need to edit and re-encode to create a more modern format with lower bitrate/file size, so you'll have to deal with that, but results should be very good. Using one of those rinky-dink usb converters that you started out with sounds easy, but if even if it works, you'll find that it's a usb 2 device typically with very limited dynamic range and very high compression, so it bakes in the noise and loss of detail in light and dark areas, especially when using the typically provided software. One way many of those devices lowers the bitrate is to de-interlace by capturing every other field and scaling it from 240p to 480p. This YouTube video describes a process to instead capture the native interlaced signal with no compression using VirtualDub (Windows only) then doing all sorts of processing to create finished files. How to convert VHS videotape to 60p digital video (NTSC) | | | | | | | | | | | How to convert VHS videotape to 60p digital video (NTSC) | | | The method described is all very sound, but extremely time-consuming and I have to wonder about the image quality from the outset. It's way more efficient to deal with the processing he mentions in real time using professional hardware when possible. One other thing that's often overlooked is how important it is to assess different needs of different collections and end users/uses so that a sensible and efficient approach is taken on a case-by-case basis, since needs and wants can vary so much among different recordings. Back in the 80's I worked at a place that converted S-8mm film (and other film formats) to VHS tape. I saw the care they took most of the time and was on the production team when orders started to pile up. Now I'm converting my own VHS tapes to digital. If you have a lot of tape, it might make sense to do it yourself, unless you feel the condition of the tape is too delicate to handle yourself (like the oxide is falling off the acetate). I had about 50 tapes to transfer, so I bought a ClearClick Video2Digital Converter 2.0 and borrowed an S-VHS semi-pro deck from my local public access TV station (they don't use them anymore -- was just in storage) and recorded the tapes onto thumb drives, which I then moved to my internal HD for editing and clipping. The quality of the video generated by the ClearClick is pretty good, all things considered, and it was easy to see what was going on because the unit has a small screen you can look at while it's working. I used the s-video port and the RCA L/R audio. Your mileage may vary. * https://www.ebay.com/itm/183897443817?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28 Mik Mik Muller, president Montague WebWorks 20 River Street, Greenfield, MA 413-320-5336 http://MontagueWebWorks.com Powered by ROCKETFUSION On 2/8/2022 6:05 PM, Michael Lynch via Hidden-discuss wrote: > I had a negative experience with EverPresent. > > They tried to bill me for products I never requested, and they tried > to charge me a different amount than they quoted me. So my case is different in that regard. I will say though, that problems in playback/signal are becoming more the rule than the exception when it comes to consumer videotape playback, and even so with professional master tapes (specifically Ampex, 3M and a few others which have sticky shed syndrome, requiring heat treatment to stabilize the binder). But the thing I forgot to ask Mike from his original post is why he didn't stick with the files ripped from the DVDs. Sure you don't want to download a 3-hour file, but you can cut and organize them like you did your eventual files from Everpresent. I suppose it was a quality issue of the DVD? The better units had (have?) hard drives in them so you can edit and compile content before burning to DVD. Panasonic might still make a unit like that. That workflow is actually probably the best DIY solution I can think of since you have a DVD hard copy (and even HDD in the unit for as long as that lasts), plus your derivative files from the DVD, which could be the native MPEG-2 and/or re-encode to MPEG-4, where you could apply some additional processing if desired. Handbrake can do a lot of that heavy lifting. Steve Unkles, Production Manager ??? I have ceased doing business with Verizon entirely (which, based on my recent experience, doesn?t mean they won?t continue to bill me for services they are not providing). I had a very pleasant transition to T-mobile, dealing with Gene Lacoy at the Music Store on Federal Street in Greenfield. Gene is knowledgeable and helpful and followed through on everything he said he would do. My boyfriend and I are sharing a two-line plan with a senior discount and we both have new phones as part of the deal. I have an iPhone13pro, which was in stock. It was a little tricky to set up but Gene did the file transfer from my old iphone SE with a very generous trade in as part of the deal. My boyfriend also traded in his Samsung phone (no idea what model, I only know about apple products) with a trade in and has a new one in transit probably arriving tomorrow. The account is in my name so I get the tax benefit. My share of the monthly bill, which includes a payment on the new phone, is way less than half of my previous Verizon bill. And I am going to follow through on sending a complaint to the Better Business Bureau about Verizon. I have heard such good reports, from you and many others, that I am not worried about reception on my new phone. And having a real, live person I can go talk to about any problems that might arise is HUGE. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with me. If you go see Gene, tell him I sent you, and bring him some cookies. He loves cookies. Lynne Lynne Rudi? I'm of the opinion that there are advantages to knowing how much we raise on their behalf--but we want to make it easy for people to donate and not clutter it up with collecting the money and sending it off. We don't have an affiliate relationship with them and of course we have no access to their stats page. If I take their link, https://www.angrytiasandabuelas.com/donate , and convert it to https://www.angrytiasandabuelas.com/donate?source=JAIJ , will they be able to easily retrieve the number of times that link was accessed and the total raised? Is that the best way, or should I be looking at another method entirely? They are not techies (their fundraising collection is actually handled by another partner org). We just decided to do this at our meeting this afternoon. They have an urgent need to raise significant money to build safe shelters for migrants arriving at the border and being threatened by cartels and gangs. Many have been kidnapped, including children. I know it's short notice, but I'm hoping to report back this evening on what I've learned. -- Shel Horowitz - "The Transformpreneur" ________________________________________________ Contact me to bake in profitability while addressing hunger, poverty, war, and catastrophic climate change * First business ever to be Green America Gold Certified * Inducted into the National Environmental Hall of Fame * Certified speaker: International Platform Association https://goingbeyondsustainability.com mailto:shel at greenandprofitable.com 413-586-2388 Award-winning, best-selling author of 10 books. That is normally used to position the new page further into the content. Using bit.ly is not a back idea -- I have used my own web sites with forwarding code for that purpose - it works because I have a number of short domain names - like rzig.com -- you can get WP plugins that make it easy and provide tracking info also. Do this."
