I recommend a registrar NOT run by your hosting company. Specifically I suggest Hover which is run by Opensrs. It can cost you slightly more since most hosting companies offer 1st yr registration free or cheap -- in the long run the separation pays off for control and reliability. Disclaminer: I've been a opensrs reseller for close to 20 years (Was TuCows) and have found them as both reliable and having flexible and useful interface and options. As a reseller I can also arrange transfers and then move the domain to a end-consumer Hover account.
