[Hidden-tech] NFTs anyone ?

As covered in a past HT thread on this, even proof orf work cryptos are much more energy efficient than the systems they aim to replace. Banking is the obvious case--way less buildings, atms, skyscrapers, commutes, lawyers and insurance fees and their expensive, non-green infrastructure, etc. Same goes for most any decent crypto--much less pollution.

HI Shel,

Thanks for bringing up the question of environmental impact because it's definitely an important issue to address. It's true that any Proof of Work blockchain, like Bitcoin, ethereum, dogecoin, require increasingly absurd amounts of energy to operate and this is because of how these systems are designed to require more complex cryptographic hashes in order to grow their blockchains. There are many other cryptocoins (or altcoins) that don't use Proof of Work algorithms but are instead developing Proof of Stake systems that are much more energy efficient.

As I've said in the previous email, I've done some stuff on ethereum NFT platforms but the big majority of my NFTs are on the Tezos blockchain, which calls itself a clean blockchain. Here's some information on how the energy usage compares to Ethereum and Bitcoin:

https://wiki.tezosagora.org/learn/baking/tezos-energy-consumption

Of course this is from Tezos themselves and I'm not sure how accurate these numbers are. But talking to an artist friend who has sold and collected over 1000 NFTs on Tezos in a year, she calculated the energy usage of her NFTs to be equal to running a few light bulbs for a year. Similarly baking Tezos (the process of verifying transactions in a block) uses as much energy as a single-family home.

So while there still is a fair amount of energy consumption happening, it's not at the scale of Proof of Work algorithms that consume enough energy to destabilize power grids. It's also worth mentioning that many of the web2 things we are used to doing, like binge-watching Netflix, or scrolling Instagram all day, also require immense amounts of energy consumption.

I hope this is helpful! And I'm happy to answer any more questions.

Cheers,
Sabato

While I've personally had zero experience with NFTs, it's important to be cognizant of the environmental issues that Seth Godin raised a year ago about them. I've shared this once before but several months ago and I see names I don't recognize in this thread--so here it is again. https://seths.blog/2021/03/nfts-are-a-dangerous-trap/

Sabato, since you mentioned that you use a "clean" platform, perhaps you could shed light on how Tezos does better than the other platforms on energy sinks, etc.

PS: Seth is spearheading a crowdsourced project called The Carbon Almanac, wich--with his huge influence plus 300 volunteers--may reach climate skeptics in the marketing world much more powerfully than I or others might be able tod o.

Hi Everyone,

I'm a new media artist and since last all I've been making most of my living income by selling NFTs. I've put work on the ethereum, algorand, and soon solana blockchains, but I do the bulk of my transactions on Tezos, which is a supposedly clean blockchain with a thriving international digital art/new media community. I also collect a lot of digital art on the tezos blockchain, having over a decade of experience working with and curating within post-internet art scenes. I think there's a ton of potential in that space, especially for digital artists whose works have either been overlooked by traditional creative industries or exploited by tech conglomerates. I'm happy to consult with anyone who has art clients or has a serious project in mind. I don't think NFTs are for everyone, especially if you're not into social media, but there's a ton of potential in that space.

Anyways, just throwing it out there.

Happy Sunday!

Thanks for the replies rich, Denise, and David. I'm swamped next two days but email you on list thereafter. For now though, David your candid clarity about NFTs is refreshing. I look forward to checking out the app.

As a traditional/digital artist, I am also interested in learning more and possibly collaborating down the road, should it be worth doing so. Learning more about it takes precedence, personally, however. I just heard more about it in a podcast and don't fully understand any of it, concept included.

We had a discussion about Crypto a while back with some spin off

NFTs use crypto however are a process and market to themselves - some

Looking into using NFTs to sell for various options - open to any ideas

Also for anyone who want to collaborate on such efforts.
