[Hidden-tech] VPN recommendation?

 Hi Ted,

Based on my user experience with a VPN when I traveled to China in 2019, I can offer a few points:

1)Think about the reason(s) you want a VPN and evaluate options from that point of view. If possible, look for user reviews/recommendations from people in your situation and ignore the more general opinions. For me, that meant people who'd used the VPN in China to access websites and services blocked/banned by the Chinese government.

2)Look for a free trial period or at least a generous refund policy, along with technical help available. I had to install a VPN on three devices and one of the three gave me a lot of trouble. I had to email tech support several times to get it to work. Overall, installation wasn't as easy as promised.

3)Insofar as possible, test the VPN on all your devices before you really need to use it. When I was in China, the VPN didn't function all the time, but it did often enough to serve its purpose.

For me the only criteria were: 1)Could I, with my limited tech abilities, install and use it? and 2)Would it work in China?

I'm sure your criteria would be different, but your first step is figuring out what you want the VPN to do.

Good luck,

I would like to get a VPN.  What features should I look for?  What makes a good VPN vs a bad VPN.
Thanks,Ted
