Hamill) Date: Sat, 2 Oct 2021 19:41:08 -0400 Subject: [Hidden-tech] Northampton city vote on municipal internet Message-ID: If you live in Northampton or know people who live in Northampton, please read! In 2017, the Northampton Community Network Coalition got its start from members on this list. It's about a month until Northampton city elections and after years of work it is finally time for voters to have their say on creating a city-run municipal network. Before voting for any candidates, you will be voting on Question 1 - whether to allow the city to create a municipal light plant (MLP). If you want the city to provide high-speed internet services to all residents and businesses in the city, it's critical that you vote YES on Question 1. Despite the question's title, the city would NOT be building a power plant or telephone company. State law requires that voters authorize a MLP in order for municipalities to create municipal networks. Please share this with your neighbors and friends in Northampton. We have noticed there is confusion in the community on the intent of Question 1. It's critical that voters understand its true purpose. Our coalition is hoping the Northampton community will help chip in for our campaign to pass this initiative. We're targeting $2000 for our campaign and have collected $845 so far. Can you help us? We're grateful for those who contributed so far. We have a PayPal button if that works for you, plus many other ways to contribute to this campaign! While on our donate page, if you want a lawn sign or bumper sticker, click on the menu link at the top. We should have lawn signs and stickers in about ten days. https://www.northamptonma.net/donate/ To learn more about this effort, visit our website: https://www.northamptonma.net -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Here's our story: We bought our house with a Jenn-Air downdraft gas range in place, having no idea of what a liability that would be. It was already old when we moved in, and has continued to deteriorate. The entire kitchen layout is based around using a downdraft range, rather than one with a conventional range hood - but downdrafts are rare and insanely expensive. Last Spring we found a good deal on a pristine, barely-used Jenn-Air downdraft gas range, bought from a private party. We brought it home, but it got damaged in transit - and unfortunately, the damage was to the metal tube that conveys gas from the house supply to the burners - so even though the tube isn't actually broken, it may not be safe to use. So began our search for a replacement part. Over a period of months, we gradually learned that no replacement exists; we have searched parts dealers all over the US and Canada; no one has it, no one can get it, the manufacturer (Whirlpool) no longer makes it, and is not accepting special orders for it. So, we're out of ideas. We have a $2000 hunk of metal on our porch that we can't use. The damage to the tube is relatively minor (only a couple of inches out of a couple of feet of tubing), and we would happily pay someone to repair it, if there's a way to do that where it will still be safe to convey propane gas. We'd be incredibly grateful for any ideas! I can provide more detailed info and pictures if anyone wants to know. Regards, ?? My problem: I used to use Time Machine with my mac (I haven?t since this problem arose, but I?m still backed in several ways, so no worries there.). My last regular TM update was on July 19, 2020. On July 19, 2020 I rolled back the system date to July 19, 2017 (long story) and forgot to turn off TM. Now TM reports that the OLDEST backup is July 1, 2019, but the MOST RECENT backup is July 19, 2017. I had TM turned off between July 19 and Aug 2, and when I turned it back on on August 2, 2020, Time Machine ran ALOT, and I wondered if it was erasing all the backups prior to 2017, i.e. if it was erasing ALL my old backups. So I turned it off again. Was Time Machine erasing all my old backups? Is there a way to fix this? Do I need to? I am comfortable using Terminal. Can I delete or redate the Alias named ?Latest?? I look forward to any help I can get. Thanks. You'll see it's a very specific shape, not just a length of tubing.(ignore that their page lists it as a 'special order' - it's not available) - I don't think this is something the average plumber or appliance repair shop is going to take on. Our own plumber does gas work and is very competent, but this is out of his wheelhouse. Same with the two authorized Jenn-Air service providers in this area. Thank you everyone for your ideas, which I will be following up on! Here's some more info: The part number is W10224724 (also may be listed as WPL-W10224724). It is for a Jenn-Air downdraft gas range, model JDS9865BDP23 (the large object sitting on our porch under a tarp). I think it's made out of stainless steel The best picture I've found for it is here: https://www.coastparts.com/lookup/69488/408454#diagram. You have to click on the thumbnail labeled '06 - Gas controls'. Then scroll down the page and look at the one labeled number 11. You'll see it's a very specific shape, not just a length of tubing.(ignore that their page lists it as a 'special order' - it's not available) I don't think this is something the average plumber or appliance repair shop is going to take on. Our own plumber does gas work and is very competent, but this is out of his wheelhouse. Same with the two authorized Jenn-Air service providers in this area. However, we would love referrals to metal fabricators that anyone can recommend from personal experience. My sense is that it would not be rocket science for someone with the right equipment and skills. Thanks again! Regards, ?? Regarding that group, it stalled ~2 months ago partly because the "vetters' sub-group accomplished most of their investment goals (though only ~50% in my case), and because I got caught up trying to educated people and organize collective action against our country's dizzying lack of understanding of how scientific and medical truth is established, which social issue overrode my merely personal goals. I plan to reignite the "PC-CIG" (Pioneer Valley Crypto Investing Group) when I can catch a breath, as I believe that the crypto vetting system I arrived at could help all users help one another choose winning cryptos other than Bitcoin and Ethereum. David, thanks for your reply. I'll email you separately with details, but tmyhe overview may interest the HT group generally. Except for North Korea, the US is the most restrictive country regarding investing in safe, fair-yield cryptos (5-12%, and often much more with little more risk). Bank lobbies don't want citizens escaping the ~1% interest regime, and though the laws aren't yet in place to make circumventing such restrictions illegal, the enforcement debars us nonetheless. The technical challenges of bypassing those restrictions are not complicated in abstract, but the details of each step require advanced computer and internet expertise and intermediate+ crypto knowledge. Regarding more basic setup of computers for crypto, I believe there's a huge opportunity for enterprising people to make a good business of such services. Security, VPNs, hard/cold and hot/soft crypto wallet setup, and the like, expertly guided would yield such a business and its clients high ROI.
