Several options, depending on car vintage:

1) there is the old "fake audio cassette" hack: a device that is in the shape
of an audio cassette (remember those?) that connects to the headphone jack of
an audio player device and is inserted into your car's cassette player. Of
course this is for a car with a "vintage" cassette player, eg an old beater...

2) then there are car audio systems with an AUX input, this is a matter of
connecting via a cable from headphone jack to AUX input.

3) USB audio (doubles as charger for one's phone)

4) Bluetooth.

I believe new cars have had 3 or 4 (maybe both) as standard equipment for the
last several years now.

*I* don't have a car, but I have hitch hiked a lot and have seen all four of
the above at one time or another.
