We would like to digitize our archival hardcopy magazines, and we are looking for the best option. Does anyone have experience with this and can make a recommendation for OCR software? We have tried Adobe Acrobat Pro and a couple others, but are having some difficulty recognizing text that is printed over images. Important features are searchable PDF creation in a magazine format. We are using an Epson Perfection V500 Plus scanner, if that matters. Your recommendations are much appreciated! SO this is not just a pick software question -- it's more about the overall project design: ?? Just a few parts: ??????? most higher level scanners include good OCR systems -- ABBYY is included with many PC/MAC systems ??? ??? Are the journals sheet feed-able? or can they be even if cutting the bindings. ??????? Or even better, has someone else digitized or will help digitize - just are Archive.org that has both a major archive and infrastructure for digitizing. ??? ??? Is there the staff to handle this or what cost has to be covered. ??? ??? What is the most effective platform, there are reason to get into linux systems - such as Tesseract ???????? Once it's digitized, how will it be search -- the most common system for such online use is Elasticsearch, which you can run on AWS or almost any cloud platform. As you can tell - there is a lot more to that question than just software -- there are few comments above - if you want to discuss this more, email off-list Stay well - Rich On 5/5/2021 3:53 PM, Joanna Campe via Hidden-discuss wrote: > Hi everyone, > > I hope you are all safe and well. > > We would like to digitize our archival hardcopy magazines, and we are > looking for the best option. For Covid Risk Calculator, and other work. Message-ID: Hi All, I?ve long thought the public should have a Covid risk calculator in which one could enter or click their age and comorbidities to get a probability of hospitalization, critical care, and death upon infection. Given the year plus of official date now, it should be relatively easy to make a one that accurately reflects official data. For example, the CDC recently updated their ?survival rates by age? behind which they provide more detailed data then this CDC summary:: 0-17: 99.997% 18-49: 99.95% 50-64: 99.4% 65+: 91% Backing out all comorbidities makes risks dramatically lower than the above. For example, the CDC reports that 78% of deaths come from the overweight and obese cohort. Many people would like to know their individual risk. You would think our governments would provide this, but I could find nothing of the sort. This Github project may be it, but if it is a spreadsheet, my upload to Google Sheets didn?t make it work; perhaps it would work on Excel. https://github.com/CSSEGISandData/COVID-19/tree/master/csse_covid_19_data . For anyone who could handle the above, I have other Google Sheet work for my firm I?d pay for. People in general are bad at risk ( what if you had a 9% or even 1% chance of dying every time you drove anywhere?!).? ??I would think the concern for most folks is: do *I* get anything severe?? sure death is bad but long-hauling doesn't seem fun either.? Some folks might even wonder: do I give anyone in my family anything severe?? Actual community minded folks might even say: Do I increase the prevalence of suffering in my community/region/state etc...? If 9% of everyone 65+ died, we'd have bodies stacked everywhere.? I don't know about Google Sheets b/c I avoid all things Google as much as possible but I'd be surprised if it doesn't open them as well. One thing I noticed is that right-clicking on a single .csv filename and choosing "Save As..." saved the HTML for the github page that you get if you click on those filename links rather than the actual CSV file contents... to get (only) the actual CSV file, you need to either: * download the entire repository (all the folders and files) from https://github.com/CSSEGISandData/COVID-19 -- on that page there is a green "Code" button which offers you a zip file download option; once you unzip that file you will have the entire directory structure with all the .csv files in it * download individual files by clicking on the .csv filename, and then on the next github page where you see the file listed in the main part of the page (unless it's too large to list), clicking the "Raw" option to get *just* the csv file contents, then save that "page" as a .csv file Once you have one or more .csv files, you can just double-click them to open with your default spreadsheet application. Using skills I've developed over 25 years at my firm, I have made a system for vetting cryptocurrencies to invest in. It makes very efficient the process of scoring several key attributes according to underlying data provided by Messari.io and other resource websites. Even with efficiency, however, it takes time, and I imagine organizing a small group where each person tackles one of ~20 sectors. This is a personal project, and I?m not selling anything. In fact, I?m gladly giving away the fruits of a lot of labor on this system, in hopes that a group will use it, and no doubt improve it, to create mutual benefit. Collaborative Project In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Thanks for the shoutout, Rich. I am still on the Hidden Tech list, lurking, lurking... I have a few thoughts about crypto and a good deal of experience in that space, but they are bound to be contrarian. #1) The main selling point at the moment is for its perceived anti-inflationary properties. e.g. Bitcoin has an algorithmically fixed supply -- it won't be affected in the same way by Biden printing more money to fund a Coronavirus - slumped economy. Except that Ethereum is the hottest property at the moment, and it is not a deflationary currency. It does have some extremely interesting and valuable properties -- for instance, enabling decentralized apps (or DAPPS) -- "smart contracts" that execute automatically and are self-enforcing in any jurisdiction. #2) Crypto is not a carbon-neutral technology. Newer innovations like Holochain offer promise in this area, but for the Bitcoin blockchain and other mined Proof-of-Work currencies, transactions carry a significantly higher energy footprint than traditional fiat-based secure e-commerce. This was the main reason I got out of the space . #3) For those unaware, we have an unprecedented ransomware cyber-attack to our energy infrastructure playing out right now, as hackers have shut down Colonial Pipeline, which supplies much of the East Coast with gasoline from Texas to New Jersey. This is expected to impact fuel prices and other economic indicators nationwide, but the real question on my mind is whether Biden and Congress will "fight back" by introducing legislation making it more difficult to use Bitcoin -- the primary currency for ransomware. An outright ban is unlikely, but even saber-rattling could cause a 20-30% slump in the prices of leading coins. With this in mind, I would say that while speculating in coin is fun and easy, volatility has not gone away. I do not advise anyone investing a significant portion of their assets in this space if they are unfamiliar with it, especially because we are at the top of the market. Happy to discuss further. Several options, depending on car vintage: 1) there is the old "fake audio cassette" hack: a device that is in the shape of an audio cassette (remember those?) that connects to the headphone jack of an audio player device and is inserted into your car's cassette player. Of course this is for a car with a "vintage" cassette player, eg an old beater... 2) then there are car audio systems with an AUX input, this is a matter of connecting via a cable from headphone jack to AUX input. 3) USB audio (doubles as charger for one's phone) 4) Bluetooth. I believe new cars have had 3 or 4 (maybe both) as standard equipment for the last several years now. *I* don't have a car, but I have hitch hiked a lot and have seen all four of the above at one time or another. > > Thank you in advance. Most cars have a wired (USB) connection for most phones as well. In Massachusetts, hands-free driving (phone calls) has been the norm and, more recently, the law for over a year. Whatever you do overall to enable a hands-free phone call in your car should also work for your podcast and audio apps. I hope that helps. -dave *Dave Ruderman* *david.ruderman at gmail.com * On Mon, May 10, 2021 at 10:14 AM Marcia Yudkin via Hidden-discuss < hidden-discuss at lists.hidden-tech.net> wrote: > I apologize for the cluelessness of this question... > > I am thinking of putting lots of my audio content on a listening app > (Soundwise) that provides access on Apple and Android phones and on the > web. I am looking for some cofounders for a worker coop based in Western Massachusetts, focused on product design and engineering research.? Specifically, I am working on self-reproducing robots with an iterative design modal where every facet of the overall goal can be individually commercialized.? This hopefully will lead to a much faster breakeven point then would be otherwise possible, meaning much less need to search for funding and more avenues of which to acquire it. ??? The first product I am prototyping is a robot vacuum.? The aim is for the final design to target companies with a large physical surface area that needs to be cleaned on a regular basis.? You can see a bit more about some of the design goals for the overall initiative and a market analysis for the "Boto Bot Vacuum" in the descriptions on the website ( https://otherrealm.org/ ).? I hope to work in close collaboration with other people at UMass Amherst and the Five Colleges as well as other worker cooperatives, but still be an entirely separate entity. ??? I am specifically looking for people who want to go in on renting or buying a suitable building in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts (within 10 miles of Amherst, MA) as well as remote collaborators.? If you have any interest in robotics or transhumanism, please fill out the form on the website ( https://otherrealm.org/collaborators ) and we will be in touch!
