David,

Dreamhost is pretty good and great if you're comfortable at the commandline. They offer shared hosting and non-root VPS which means you have isolated resources but not so much control over the server as the more common VPS solutions. That may be preferred depending on your situation. Their admin panel makes transitioning between shared/VPS options seamless. If you're looking for a WordPress VPS they also offer DreamPress which is optimized for that including a Varnish cache, stage/live environments, auto-upgrades, and lots of other tuning.

If you're willing/able to run your own Linux server, consider DigitalOcean. $5 for the smallest instance and a lot of granular add-ons like backup snapshots. It's like AWS or one of the other cloud offerings without being overwhelming.

Jeff M,

I'd love to talk to you about WordPress on Pantheon. Their services are *expensive* but they've been solid for a Drupal client. If they don't do well with WordPress, I'd like to know that for an upcoming project.
