This requires first installing Linux. I've done that; Fedora in particular because the production server for the project I'm hoping to work on uses it. However, having done that, when I try to start it, Linux will not run because I don't have Hyper-V enabled, which I can't because I have Windows 10 Home. Before I pay $35 to the Evil Empire to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, I want to confirm that it's necessary and I'm not going down the wrong rabbit hole. I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with this configuration. --Alan From heller at deepsoft.com Thu Jul 8 19:05:01 2021 From: heller at deepsoft.com (Robert Heller) Date: Thu, 8 Jul 2021 15:05:01 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [Hidden-tech] Installing Linux --> Docker on Win10 In-Reply-To: References: ? <638579647.995880.1625072885111@mail.yahoo.com>? <0d34854d1fc6cf03c725c2a27d794f52@8wheels.org>? <407457828.1355398.1625592260908@mail.yahoo.com> Message-ID: <20210708190501.17143221F2E@sharky4.deepsoft.com> At Thu, 08 Jul 2021 09:20:36 -0400 Alan Frank wrote: > > I am trying to install Docker on Windows 10. How are you installing Linux? In a VM? What virtualization system are you using? *Linux* itself does not need Hyper-V, but maybe (?) the virtualization system you are using wants it (don't know why that would be either). Maybe you selected a wrong option? I've installed Linux both on the bare metal and in VMs (with a Linux host), never needed Hyper-V, just fairly garden varity processors. I do know that when my VM hosting machine boots up and starts the virtualization, it notes that Hyper-V is not available and notes that the Hyper-V kernel modules are not loaded. This is just informative and has no other effect. > > --Alan > _______________________________________________ > Hidden-discuss mailing list - home page: http://www.hidden-tech.net > Hidden-discuss at lists.hidden-tech.net > > You are receiving this because you are on the Hidden-Tech Discussion list. > If you would like to change your list preferences, Go to the Members > page on the Hidden Tech Web site. > http://www.hidden-tech.net/members > > > -- Robert Heller -- Cell: 413-658-7953 GV: 978-633-5364 Deepwoods Software -- Custom Software Services http://www.deepsoft.com/ -- Linux Administration Services heller at deepsoft.com -- Webhosting Services From the at otherrealm.org Thu Jul 8 21:12:35 2021 From: the at otherrealm.org (Aaron E-J) Date: Thu, 8 Jul 2021 17:12:35 -0400 Subject: [Hidden-tech] Installing Linux --> Docker on Win10 In-Reply-To: <20210708190501.17143221F2E@sharky4.deepsoft.com> References: <638579647.995880.1625072885111@mail.yahoo.com> <0d34854d1fc6cf03c725c2a27d794f52@8wheels.org> <407457828.1355398.1625592260908@mail.yahoo.com> <20210708190501.17143221F2E@sharky4.deepsoft.com> Message-ID: I have dealt with this in reverse.? Your best bet is to install VirtualBox , then install a full Linux VM, and then install Docker into the Linux VM. The GitHub repo is filled with lots of recent commits and issues. They support modern versions of PHP. Lots of documentation. All good signs that I wish I saw more often... The content editor on the demo is "old-school" compared to the explosion of block editors and builders in the WordPress world. That may not be an issue for your client. The demo admin seems really clean and fast. If you find extensions that do what you need, or find the learning curve for a custom plugin to be reasonable, then it seems worth a shot. I hope you'll report back to us if you go that route. So they are sure that the have the correct password(s). Somewhat obvious since you are able to login to do things like update plugins, etc. and they can log in from other computers. There are two possiblities: There is some borked with cookies on the misbehaving computer. They have a security plugin that is blocking IP addresses (eg too many failed logins) and the misbehaving computer's IP is on the block list. If the former, you can clear the cache and dump the cookies. Also, is the misbehaving computer storing the WP password? Is it storing the wrong password? Also (have to ask, even it it is obviously stupid): caps lock? Since the problem seems to be specific to one computer, the problem is most likely there (and not on the server or anything server-side, including WP or any plugins or the theme). > > Thank you!! > Julie Waggoner > MicaBlue Creative > > > -- Robert Heller -- Cell: 413-658-7953 GV: 978-633-5364 Deepwoods Software -- Custom Software Services http://www.deepsoft.com/ -- Linux Administration Services heller at deepsoft.com -- Webhosting Services From jwerner at jwdp.com Tue Jul 20 20:49:30 2021 From: jwerner at jwdp.com (Jan Werner) Date: Tue, 20 Jul 2021 16:49:30 -0400 Subject: [Hidden-tech] WordPress login issues In-Reply-To: <025301d77d90$336775e0$9a3661a0$@micablue.com> References: <010201d77d82$5d632c80$18298580$@micablue.com> <28069c88-4d49-4e31-bb24-6d3a0513c3be@itabix.com> <01b101d77d86$db120580$91361080$@micablue.com> <83805a79-7554-4362-9dcd-53a515b84e0b@itabix.com> <025301d77d90$336775e0$9a3661a0$@micablue.com> Message-ID: This sounds to me like some kind of firewall or DNS cache problem on the computer that you can't login from. You did not specify the operating system, but for Windows I would start by flushing the DNS cache (ipfconfig /flushdns). No doubt someone here can tell you how to do the same thing on a Mac. If that doesn't work, you should start looking through your firewall settings, which will depend on the OS and firewall system used. They are similar to my local Northampton Open Media, but several times the size, and using FileMaker to manage everything. They are unhappy with their platform, and they want to fix it or ditch it. I'm looking for a FM pro to consult with them on assessment, and then to make and implement a plan if they decide to overhaul it. Thanks! In any case, with print runs that low, you'll be using digital printing--the books are generated one at a time through a process resembling photocopying but from digital instead of paper originals. Especially with a color interior, offset will not be viable. Keep in mind that you are not tied to one printer for all purposes. So, for instance, you might want to fulfill bookstore orders through Ingram Spark (formerly called LightningSource), Amazon and Kindle orders through Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP, f/k/a CreateSpace), and one of the local printers you've been recommended for other purposes such as back-of-the-room-after-a-talk sales--or for doing customized editions your customers/marketing partners can give or sell through their own networks (with language like "A Gift From XYZ Bank of New England"). I haven't done any printing with King but I can say that Tom Campbell is very customer-centric. I don't know Highland or Small Batch--but from their website, Small Batch looks like more of a publishing service than a printer. If you want to go out-of-area, I've been very pleased with Thomson-Shore in Michigan. And you should at least get a quote from Levellers Press in Amherst/Florence (inside Collective Copies). For runs this small, they might actually be competitive and they are easy to work with. It is nice to be able to expound on something here ;-). Usually, I'm asking for help, but I have 16 years experience as a book shepherd. I am revising some of the obsolete inner pages, such as Shel's Other Books and Sites (frugalfun.com) , and I notice these files are not pulling most of the page design elements, other than the green sidebar--but not the text that goes into the sidebar. At the end of the section, it calls the CSS: And then at the bottom, it calls the specific elements--but the file doesn't display them:

I noticed that other pages on the site have the same problem, which means I messed something up when I was fixing the home page. Just to make sure, I went back to an Archive.org snapshot and clicked through to two of the articles, including https://web.archive.org/web/20160324165141/http://frugalfun.com/greener-holiday.html . The sidebar menu was in place--which means there is no technical reason why a plain old html page can't get the menu in the sidebar. But when I go in directly to https://frugalfun.com/greener-holiday.html, the sidebar is blank. Php is way out of my depth. But that it's pandemic throughout the site means it's probably just a simple tweak of the home page code for someone who knows what they're doing--probably reinserting something I took out that I shouldn't have. I did save a copy of the code before I started messing around with it. And that the problem is not showing on the archived copy means that it *is* fixable in html. I did send the raw code for the home page Monday, subject line "Re: Little HTML code issue" (it's the first response to my original post). If anyone wants to take a look, I'm grateful, as always. Also you mis-took my PHP comment - you don't need to know any thing special to use PHP in this case - all you need to do it change the to And activate PHP on both .html and .shtml files -- Rich Roth CEO TnR Global Bio and personal blog: http://rizbang.com Building the really big sites: http://www.tnrglobal.com Small/Soho business in the PV: http://www.hidden-tech.net Places to meet for business: http://www.meetmewhere.com And for Arts and relaxation: http://TarotMuertos.com - Artistic Tarot Deck http://www.welovemuseums.com http://www.artonmytv.com/ Shakers: http://www.shakerpedia.com/ Helping move the world: http://www.earththrives.com -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... The current documentation (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/virtualization/hyper-v-on-windows/quick-start/enable-hyper-v) says "The Hyper-V role cannot be installed on Windows 10 Home." I will revert to WSL1 and see if I can run with that. According to this FAQ, you should be able to run WSL2 on Windows Home edition. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/wsl2-faq You may need to enable virtualization in your computer's BIOS menu on start-up. You can also just try using the WSL1 which does not use Hyper-V to the best of my knowledge, but WSL2 will be faster for many operations. Let me know if you make progress. I've been meaning to play around with Docker myself. Good luck, Ben Lazan On Thu, Jul 8, 2021 at 1:53 PM Alan Frank via Hidden-discuss wrote: > I am trying to install Docker on Windows 10. I appreciate some of the other suggestions, and they might have been theoretically better, but given that I felt I was most of the way there, I didn't want to start over with something new. Thanks to all, Alan
