I am trying to install Docker on Windows 10. This requires first
installing Linux. I've done that; Fedora in particular because the
production server for the project I'm hoping to work on uses it.
However, having done that, when I try to start it, Linux will not run
because I don't have
Hyper-V enabled, which I can't because I have Windows 10 Home. Before
I pay $35 to the Evil Empire to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, I want to
confirm that it's necessary and I'm not going down the wrong rabbit
hole.
I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with this configuration.

How are you installing Linux? In a VM? What virtualization system are you
using?
*Linux* itself does not need Hyper-V, but maybe (?) the virtualization system
you are using wants it (don't know why that would be either). Maybe you
selected a wrong option?
I've installed Linux both on the bare metal and in VMs (with a Linux host),
never needed Hyper-V, just fairly garden varity processors. I do know that
when my VM hosting machine boots up and starts the virtualization, it notes
that Hyper-V is not available and notes that the Hyper-V kernel modules are
not loaded. This is just informative and has no other effect.

I have dealt with this in reverse.? In my case I had Hyper-V and did not
want it because it is incompatible with VirtualBox which I need for
other things.? I needed to disable Hyper-V in order for VirtualBox to work.
Your best bet is to install VirtualBox ,
then install a full Linux VM, and then install Docker into the Linux VM.
Or just scrap Windows all together and install Linux as the main OS

I have no experience with this platform but some thoughts after a quick
look at the demo site/admin:
Despite the dated look of the demo site, the extension repository seems
fairly active. The GitHub repo is filled with lots of recent commits and
issues. They support modern versions of PHP. Lots of documentation. All
good signs that I wish I saw more often...
The content editor on the demo is "old-school" compared to the explosion
of block editors and builders in the WordPress world. That may not be an
issue for your client. The demo admin seems really clean and fast.
If you find extensions that do what you need, or find the learning curve
for a custom plugin to be reasonable, then it seems worth a shot.
I hope you'll report back to us if you go that route.

I second the recommendation for VirtualBox as I've run into the same
issues: Windows Home doesn't let you use Hyper-V. I believe that
VirtualBox is free - even for commercial use - as long as you do not use
the USB extensions. I use it daily for dev environments.

We're not fans. We didn't deploy anything in it, but we built some test
sites. We've also moved 3 clients out of it and into Wordpress or Drupal.
They were miserable in Contao due to the lack of features, support,
community, and general UX.
Just from the perspective of getting developer support down the line,
Contao is extremely limited (read that as expensive), and WordPress is the
opposite. I'm sure someone who has used it more than we have could give you
some reasons why it's better, but I can't think of a single one.
Good luck.

I'm a big fan of rsync.net. They've been around a long time, they build
their own infra, and they really know what they're doing. Very
Unix-oriented, i.e. you can use rsync / sftp / scp etc. to manage the
filesystem.
If I'm reading their pricing right, it's $25/mo for 1TB and the rate
drops at 10TB and 100TB.

Hi Everyone,
I am a self-taught developer learning full time since last July. I am at
the point where I need a job ASAP and I am starting to stress out a
little bit. I made sure that I spent hours and hours learning full stack
including Python. Now I am realizing that becoming a Python Developer is
going to take some time. So I have started to focus on WIX Website Builder
and HTML including Bootstrap5. I did not get a comp-sci degree and it is
evident with basic concepts I am missing. I can pay, I live in Easthampton,
I am fully vaccinated and I can meet outside if need be. I have a B.S. in
Natural Resource Conservation and I love this work.

I have a client who is - suddenly, within the past two weeks while I was on
vacation -- unable to log into WordPress from one specific computer
(unfortunately, the computer that they do most of their work on).
They can log in from their laptop, and from other computers within the
organization, but not their own computer.
This is not my area of expertise, so I'm doing a bunch of research in order
to help them (so far I've updated plugins and installed several patches on
the back end, checked the allowed list, and am about to deactivate plugins
to see if one of them is causing a problem - next up, deactivating the
theme)..
.but if anyone has ideas or immediately knows what the issue might be, I'm
all ears!
Thank you!!

I realized I should clarify how the problem presents itself: the client is
able to access the login page, and enter their UN and PW.
Then it "thinks about it for a while" and resets to the login page without
actually logging in.

That sounds like a browser cache issue, I would either have them clear the browser cache or try with a different browser.

Since you said other stations using her login info can login - that
points to her computer, and is very specific
SO I'd start by deleting all cookies from the browser on the domain --
and also try a different browser

Hi Julie,
+1 for deleting browser cookies for the domain. Maybe cache too. Assuming ?organization? means they're logging in from the same IP address, like Rich said, it sounds specific to that computer. And check the site?s log files for recent entries.
Good luck,
Kimo

Already added a new user, and they still can?t log into the site from that computer with the new ID.
CAN log in from a different computer.
I?m working with the host company and looking into potential problems with a plugin ? if I am able to resolve, will post the solution so others can benefit.

That sounds like a browser cache issue, I would either have them clear the browser cache or try with a different browser.

Most networks have DHCP assigned IP's, I was trying to address that with
ipconfig /renew but if each machine has a fixed IP it would make sense
to try changing that, for sure.

Since it sounds like it's something with the computer but not browser specific, what's shared? Do they use a password manager or other add-ons/extensions that are active across browsers? What about antivirus/security software that may integrate with the browser or intercept requests.
Also, way out in left field: is the system time/date correct?

More thoughts... The first thing that comes to mind on the server-side would be a block by IP. If they can log in from the same LAN on a different computer/device then that's not it.
That could be verified by connecting the computer to a phone hotspot, changing the user's source network/IP.

So they are sure that the have the correct password(s). Somewhat obvious
since you are able to login to do things like update plugins, etc. and they
can log in from other computers.
There are two possiblities:
There is some borked with cookies on the misbehaving computer.
They have a security plugin that is blocking IP addresses (eg too many failed
logins) and the misbehaving computer's IP is on the block list.
If the former, you can clear the cache and dump the cookies.
Also, is the misbehaving computer storing the WP password? Is it storing the
wrong password? Also (have to ask, even it it is obviously stupid): caps
lock?
Since the problem seems to be specific to one computer, the problem is most
likely there (and not on the server or anything server-side, including WP or
any plugins or the theme).

This sounds to me like some kind of firewall or DNS cache problem on the
computer that you can't login from.
You did not specify the operating system, but for Windows I would start
by flushing the DNS cache (ipfconfig /flushdns). No doubt someone here
can tell you how to do the same thing on a Mac.
If that doesn't work, you should start looking through your firewall
settings, which will depend on the OS and firewall system used.

Hi,
I?m considering moving my office to a new location, and one of the new
places I?m considering is great, except for the acoustics. I?m looking for
a sound engineer or expert to help me figure out how I might be able to add
some acoustic panels to reduce the echo and make it sound more natural.
In our increasingly Zoom-dependent professional world, we?re hoping we can
make the new space work but want to consult an expert to be sure. Obviously
a paid gig. Anyone know a local sound engineer with a couple free hours?
Thanks,

Many thanks to Noah Paessel, who found the code snippet I accidentally
dropped. All better, now.
I love this list!

I can recommend Tom Campbell (campbellt at kingprinting.com) at King Printing in Lowell, Deb.
I?ve printed two textbooks with Tom. Very professional and economical.
I hope you?re doing well in these strange times --
Greg :-)=

Message-ID: <73D86416-AA6A-48A3-BF61-0283D43E5232@gregperham.com>
I sent an email to someone on the HT directory, but it bounced back. I thought before I do that again, I'd just put a message out to the active list. :)
I'm working with a community television organization. They are similar to my local Northampton Open Media, but several times the size, and using FileMaker to manage everything. They are unhappy with their platform, and they want to fix it or ditch it. I'm looking for a FM pro to consult with them on assessment, and then to make and implement a plan if they decide to overhaul it.
Thanks!
Greg

Hi, Deborah,
To some degree, what printers you work with depends on how you'll be using
the print run. In any case, with print runs that low, you'll be using
digital printing--the books are generated one at a time through a process
resembling photocopying but from digital instead of paper originals.
Especially with a color interior, offset will not be viable.
Keep in mind that you are not tied to one printer for all purposes. So, for
instance, you might want to fulfill bookstore orders through Ingram
Spark (formerly called LightningSource), Amazon and Kindle orders through
Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP, f/k/a CreateSpace), and one of the local
printers you've been recommended for other purposes such as
back-of-the-room-after-a-talk sales--or for doing customized editions your
customers/marketing partners can give or sell through their own networks
(with language like "A Gift From XYZ Bank of New England").
I haven't done any printing with King but I can say that Tom Campbell is
very customer-centric. I don't know Highland or Small Batch--but from their
website, Small Batch looks like more of a publishing service than a
printer. If you want to go out-of-area, I've been very pleased with
Thomson-Shore in Michigan. And you should at least get a quote from
Levellers Press in Amherst/Florence (inside Collective Copies). For runs
this small, they might actually be competitive and they are easy to work
with.
It is nice to be able to expound on something here ;-). Usually, I'm asking
for help, but I have 16 years experience as a book shepherd.

A follow-up question to my post yesterday, now that I got the landing page
working properly. I am revising some of the obsolete inner pages, such

pulling most of the page design elements, other than the green sidebar--but
not the text that goes into the sidebar.
At the end of the section, it calls the CSS:
And then at the bottom, it calls the specific elements--but the file
doesn't display them:
