MacBook Air from Yosemite to Big Sur for my significant other. The initial problem was that there wasn?t enough space on the drive to accommodate the 35 GB Big Sur OS plus the extra 10% minimum free space required. I?d imagine that you wouldn?t have gotten as far as you did without getting a message saying there isn?t enough free space on the drive to install the OS. So maybe space isn?t your issue? Anyway, for what?s it?s worth, because of the space issue, I purchased an 1.0TB Aura Pro X2 SSD Upgrade (Blade Only) for Select 2013 & Later Macs $229.00 https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/S3DAPT4MB10/ I downloaded and created a bootable installer on an USB thumb drive with High Sierra on it. (I actually made two USB Installers, one with High Sierra, and the second with Big Sur on it). HOW TO CREATE A BOOTABLE INSTALLER FOR MAC OS: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372 I took a Time Machine backup to an external drive. I installed the new SSD drive into the Air and booted from the USB installer and installed the OS that way. I?m pretty sure I ended up installing High Sierra first and then upgraded to Big Sur. For some reason I vaguely recall that Big Sur wouldn?t install. Not clear on that. Anyway, you can always reformat using the utilities on the USB boot drive and try installing again. Then I transferred the files from the Time Machine backup to the new drive. Seems to me that if you have the space, you could reformat your current SSD and do the same process ? assuming you took the Time Machine backup first. Hope this helps somehow. Good luck. Best, Kimo PS: The Air runs awesome now on Big Sur. RSVP by 12/9? *Background: *10 teams across the country were picked to finish new or upgraded educational projects that teach students Digital Literacy, a national priority.? My team project, Fake News Fitness ,? teaches students a bit about the informational ecosystem on the web to help recognize misinformation before spreading it, and even argue people off believing it. Trump's election was the impetus, and the way social media and misinformation have joined forces since to affect public health (mask and vaccine refusal), democracy ("Stop the Steal" claims) and the planet (PR by fossil fuel companies) makes this an every more urgent priority for our public schools to address. I hope the mission is of interest to everyone on Hidden-Tech. *Task: *The core tech is a Chrome extension that pops up a form to authenticate a user, pulls data from whatever web page is active, populates a the form with it, takes user entered data, and sends the data via JSON/REST, creating a document. We used to use Drupal, but now just want a Google Doc created. The extension stopped working a few years ago (changes to Chrome API / Manifest, plus a WHOIS archive change) after our coder moved to CA. Our new coder's new baby is in the way of us making any progress on some small but critical updates. I need someone signed up by December 9th. We have a $2,000 budget, which isn't much but there's not much to do here, by my lights. Here's how it worked 3 years ago: https://myinstructionaldesigns.com/eportfolio/fake-news-fitness We're making it simpler now. 1. *Phase 1:* No authentication.? On submit, display the extracted + submitted data for copy-paste into a Google Doc. 2. *Phase 2:* Authenticate as a Google user, and populate a Google Doc with the extracted + submitted form data. *Reference:* Here's the plugin page: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/fakenewsfitness-plugin/dcpelmidnpihijnggaoiphdhcmcgpfoj?hl=en Here's the repo: https://github.com/bmoreinis/fakenews Please reply if you can help with this?? I can do enough HTML/CSS/JS to add fields, make the form cleaner, optimize the code -- I just don't know enough about the Chrome API to get it working again. I went there today to do this research, but microfilm machines give me motion sickness (literally), and I couldn't do it for more than 5 minutes. I'm trying to find something that appeared in the Daily Hampshire Gazette in the 1980s, and I know the specific month and year for it. So the task is pretty simple: Find the microfilm roll for that month and year and scroll through all the issues until you find what I'm looking for, then print out a copy of the relevant article(s). Any time within the next 2 weeks would be fine. That month and year's issues were never digitized, in case you are wondering. Thanks in advance for your help! An iPhone in the sanctuary is doing the "capture" and is connected by WiFi to a cable modem/router in an adjoining room (outside the stone walls of the church). Some people place blame on those stone walls, but my speedcheck in an otherwise-empty sanctuary shows a pretty consistent ~25 Mbps up and down. As a possible solution, a WiFi extender in the sanctuary, wired with CAT6 to the modem/router, has been tried with apparent success for small mid-week services, and we may start using it for the Sunday services. *But here's my question: *Can passive WiFi use by a crowd's phones drain bandwidth and/or slow transmission speeds? Imagine a Sunday service with 100+ people in the space. Imagine that a majority have smartphones in their pockets, and some % of those are on, with WiFi enabled, and some % of *those* have used the WiFi modem/router in question and have stored its password. Let's say 25 such phones, though it might possibly be 50. Assume that no one is making intentional use of WiFi (streaming the service, watching movies, checking emails...) other than the "official" streaming iPhone, but some (most?) of those with WiFi enabled might have connected "automatically" to the modem/router in question and are doing passive tasks, unattended. With 25-50 such phones, could that raid bandwidth enough to cause hiccups in a live video upload? (Or if not with 25-50 phones, what about 250-500 such phones in a larger hall? In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: It's not implausible. Most smart devices will consume some level of bandwidth and there's only so much to go around. Additionally, it wouldn't surprise me at all if the typical "consumer" WiFi router has issues that crop up after a certain number of devices are connected. At some point, it may make sense to use a WiFi router designed for a public-use environment. I purchased an Aruba AP22 (employee discount, though I see that it's now retailing similarly to what I paid) before I was laid off from HPE last year and it's worked well for me (though not in a public environment). Holiday greetings, Hidden Tech. My church has been offering live streaming of its Sunday services via its YouTube channel. Hiccups in the video (and audio) stream are common. (And those hiccups show up when streaming the recorded version after-the-fact.) An iPhone in the sanctuary is doing the "capture" and is connected by WiFi to a cable modem/router in an adjoining room (outside the stone walls of the church). But here's my question: Can passive WiFi use by a crowd's phones drain bandwidth and/or slow transmission speeds? Imagine a Sunday service with 100+ people in the space. Imagine that a majority have smartphones in their pockets, and some % of those are on, with WiFi enabled, and some % of those have used the WiFi modem/router in question and have stored its password. Or some even-larger number?) If that could be a problem, are there solutions other than the obvious one -- asking everyone to power off, or use airplane mode, etc.?? Or some sort of temporary lock-out of all but the preferred device? Thanks for any insights and advice. Duane Dale -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I can't call Apple Support because my perfectly healthy iPhone is now in a coma. Yikes!! *In a nutshell*: I was simply trying to update my iPhone 6s from 12.1 to to 15.1. I did my homework and backed up my phone in three places and had 24 GB of available storage. After a few failed attempts to update directly from my phone, I tried iTunes (most current version). iTunes tried to update and then eventually the message was that it could not update my phone. After more research, I shut down and restarted both my MacBook and iPhone (based on the instructions from Apple Support). In the next attempt to update, iTunes gave this awful message: "The iPhone could not be updated. The device cannot be found." What?? My phone now only shows the Restore Screen: black with only the iTunes icon and a graphic of a cable and an arrow pointing to the iTunes icon - i.e. a message to plug into iTunes - and this url: support.apple.com/phone/restore . Now I'm above my paygrade. If you know what I should do, please email me. Thank you so much! Jaime Michaels -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The easiest way is for the person who's been copied to report the new fake account - FB customer service is notoriously awful, but they typically pay attention when someone does the "this person is pretending to be me" fraudulent account reporting. -Ron On Thu, Dec 16, 2021 at 1:43 PM Michael Muller via Hidden-discuss < hidden-discuss at lists.hidden-tech.net> wrote: > See if she can still log in (ie; the hackers didn't change the password) > and if so, change the password immediately and view the logs of who was > contacted to let them know it wasn't her. > > Mik > > Mik Muller, president > Montague WebWorks > 239-R Main Street, Greenfield, MA > 413-320-5336http://MontagueWebWorks.com > Powered by ROCKETFUSION > > On 12/16/2021 9:37 AM, Anita Lockesmith via Hidden-discuss wrote: > > Hello HT, > An elderly friend with an inactive FB page recently 'messaged' me. After their utter failure to retrieve any data off my crashed harddrive, and also after waiting two weeks or so to get that answer, I just stood there at the service desk, asked for Mark Weinberg, the owner. When Mark eventually appeared, I told him I wanted my $69. deposit back and that I wasn't leaving until I got it. The check was issued within the hour. I then took my work to Core Solutions down the road on State Street, and they did great, retrieved almost 100% of my data. I told Mark, and his response was disgusting, and I can't even repeat it here. Then more recently, YES had a friend arrested in their store by the Northampton PD because he was not wearing a mask, and stated he had a medical exemption. He had bought a laptop from them and needed it serviced under their warranty. They refused him service, called the cops, who issued a trespass order. He was brought to the jail, had to pay bail and has a hearing in February. I know, not everyone operates the way I do, but 14 police encounters and 3 trespass orders later since last March, all on account of my non-compliance with the unenforceable illegal mask mandates, I have so far succeeded in no charges sticking and no arrests. The DAs office in the Eastern Hampshire District knows the deal. Several other law enforcement entities do, too. But way too many are still "just doing their job". So there you go, a two-for in my reply ;-) Deb On Thu, Dec 16, 2021 at 1:44 PM Fred Levine via Hidden-discuss < hidden-discuss at lists.hidden-tech.net> wrote: > I would avoid Yes Computers. I've built a small website that essentially aggregates all of my home utility data (from the various utility websites) into one dashboard.? It's been a personal project of mine for the past few years, written in Django, that I've essentially developed/hosted on my home Linux server.? Its written to be scalable, so that it works for any US State/City, assuming the web crawlers were written for the utility web sites.? I see this as a hobby venture (that could grow to be more). I'd like to go live with it, and make it available to some of my friends/family, if they were interested in using it. While I've been buttoning up things from a security perspective, I've also been researching the associated costs of actually running a website. Specifically: 1. Purchasing/Sustaining a domain name via Namecheap 2. Web hosting (maybe multiple nodes... one for main Django app, one for Redis Queue workers, one for Splash Javascript rendering support) via Digital Ocean, Heroku, or AWS. 3. Email Hosting.. 4. (Possibly) SSL Certificate purchase 5. More? I haven't yet decided on which hosting services etc to use (multiple topics for other conversations).? My assumption is that in the short (and most likely long term) this won't turn a profit, and would just be a small money hole. I thought it might make sense to at least capture these costs under some sort of 'small business' umbrella.? My naive hope is that maybe it would have positive tax implications. I've never started a business of any kind before. So.. what do I need to do?? I need to get an EIN from the IRS. I've heard an LLC may be more than I need.? What would be your suggested approach? Since these costs are fairly small, it is not going to have a huge impact. > > I've never started a business of any kind before. > > So.. what do I need to do????? I need to get an EIN from the IRS. You may or may not want to come up with a catchy name for your business. ("Peter's Utilities" ?) You don't need an EIN, unless you plan on hiring employees (eg have a payroll and deal with W2 forms, etc.). A "sole-propriator" business can just use your individual SSN as your business tax id, both on your 1040 Schedule C and for things like Sales Tax -- you only need to get a Sales Tax id, etc. if you are selling *physical* items -- eg t-shirts or some such. There is little reason to bother incorperating, unless you have multiple principals. > > Thanks in advance for your time and wisdom (and patience for my newbie > question), > > ~Peter > > > > _______________________________________________ > Hidden-discuss mailing list - home page: http://www.hidden-tech.net > Hidden-discuss at lists.hidden-tech.net > > You are receiving this because you are on the Hidden-Tech Discussion list. > If you would like to change your list preferences, Go to the Members > page on the Hidden Tech Web site. > http://www.hidden-tech.net/members > > -- Robert Heller -- Cell: 413-658-7953 GV: 978-633-5364 Deepwoods Software -- Custom Software Services http://www.deepsoft.com/ -- Linux Administration Services heller at deepsoft.com -- Webhosting Services From rich at tnrglobal.com Mon Dec 20 17:43:16 2021 From: rich at tnrglobal.com (Rich@tnr) Date: Mon, 20 Dec 2021 12:43:16 -0500 Subject: [Hidden-tech] Starting my own small Business Website In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <5179a768-33f8-0744-0fe9-72c09d0fd4ff@tnrglobal.com> you can also use a dynamic DNS to create a public web address that points to your home server It depends on how often your local IP changes - if you are using Comcast/Xfinity, I can tell your that your IP will rarely change -- I've used dyndns.com for years for that effect. Rich has a great suggestion if you want to host on your own server/internet connection. As long as it's not bandwidth heavy and/or latency sensitive, that will suffice. You can also get a business Comcast (or whatever you're using) account with a fixed IP but it's true they don't change the IP very often. You could also use a VPN with a fixed IP. If you don't want to manage your own server(s) and you would need several nodes, DigitalOcean or one of it's brethren would be great. Their DNS is very good. Another issue would be using management software such as Webmin that includes Let's Encrypt, or set up Let's Encrypt yourself, or you'd need to purchase the secure certificates which if you have several nodes can get somewhat expensive. Or just use a private certificate as long as your users know to accept/bypass it. Hosting with a regular hosting company might cramp your style, as most have restrictions and software limitations that might affect you, depending. Email hosting - if you don't care what domain you're using, use one of the free email services such as Gmail, Yandex, Yahoo, etc. Running your own mail server can suck, getting blacklisted and such. If you do want your own domain, find some cheap web hosting that includes email and use that and then you'd also have one server that you could use. Hope that's helpful. For a sole proprietorship, you need to turn a profit in three of five years in order to be able to deduct the losses in the other years. If you incorporated, you could carry the losses forward, but it seems unlikely that the tax savings would be enough to offset the cost (and hassle) of incorporation. --Alan P.S. I've built a small website that essentially aggregates all of my home utility data (from the various utility websites) into one dashboard. It's been a personal project of mine for the past few years, written in Django, that I've essentially developed/hosted on my home Linux server. Its written to be scalable, so that it works for any US State/City, assuming the web crawlers were written for the utility web sites. I see this as a hobby venture (that could grow to be more). I'd like to go live with it, and make it available to some of my friends/family, if they were interested in using it. While I've been buttoning up things from a security perspective, I've also been researching the associated costs of actually running a website. Specifically: * Purchasing/Sustaining a domain name via Namecheap * Web hosting (maybe multiple nodes... one for main Django app, one for Redis Queue workers, one for Splash Javascript rendering support) via Digital Ocean, Heroku, or AWS. * Email Hosting.. * (Possibly) SSL Certificate purchase * More? I haven't yet decided on which hosting services etc to use (multiple topics for other conversations). My assumption is that in the short (and most likely long term) this won't turn a profit, and would just be a small money hole. I thought it might make sense to at least capture these costs under some sort of 'small business' umbrella. My naive hope is that maybe it would have positive tax implications. I've never started a business of any kind before. So.. what do I need to do? I need to get an EIN from the IRS.. I've heard an LLC may be more than I need. What would be your suggested approach? Thanks in advance for your time and wisdom (and patience for my newbie question), ~Peter _______________________________________________ Hidden-discuss mailing list - home page: http://www.hidden-tech.net Hidden-discuss at lists.hidden-tech.net You are receiving this because you are on the Hidden-Tech Discussion list. I hadn't really considered it. On the one hand, as a software developer by trade, there's something appealing about not having to deal with the hassle of hosting everything myself (the devops side of things). On the other hand, I feel like I'd probably learn a lot by configuring everything myself, which wouldn't be bad in the long run.? Plus, it'd be setup exactly like I'd want it, and maybe even be cheaper in the long run. Do you have any recommendations, in terms of firewall?? There's (obviously) a software firewall built into my cable modem.? Would you consider that as sufficient, or would you recommend getting another piece of hardware? I'm glad you've had good experience with DigitalOcean.. I'd heard good things about it from a friend. Based on yours and others suggestions, I'm now leaning a bit towards trying to host my own solution on a raspberry pi or similar small device.? This approach is more expensive in time (having to set everything up myself), which is why I'd originally discounted it. ? But would probably be cheaper in the long run monetarily, and better fits my current expectation of how much it will get used. I'm going to definitely look into LetsEncrypt before purchasing a certificate.? I think I'd prefer this approach to a self-signed approach, since I'm trying to "do this right" from a security perspective. And I agree with you... I think at this point, i'd prefer to outsource the email hosting rather than host my own.? I've looked at Gmail so far, which seems reasonable. I eliminated my land line several months ago. I won?t bore you with the details of dysfunction I have experienced trying to straighten out the invoicing for the existing mobile and the non-existent land line. No doubt I am not the only person who has had this experience and it continues after 3 different people at Verizon had assured me all was well. This morning I was woken up by a call from (supposedly) Verizon saying my account had been discontinued for ?verification.? I spent more than half an hour on hold waiting to get a real person to talk to me without any luck and decided I was done with Verizon. I would be very grateful for advice (pro and con) about other carriers who have good coverage, good customer service, and reasonable rates. What I am looking for is an unlimited talk and text plan for one iPhoneSE and an Apple Watch. I want to keep the phone number I have now and I don?t need a second line. I am a senior citizen and I see that Consumer Cellular and T-Mobile have ?55+? plans but it doesn?t look as though they are unlimited talk and text. Some of the carriers offer a new phone as a perk on a new account. Is that a good deal or does it not work out to be as beneficial as they say it will be? I don?t need wifi (I am sharing an account with my tenant and it works very well). And, because we don?t always know what questions to ask until it?s too late, what else should I be thinking about? If you need data in a pinch I think they charge $5/GB. We've not had any dead regions since we got Fi including areas of VT that Tmobile didn't work (although that was over 2 yrs ago) and various places in southern EU (Spain/France/Italy) and Iceland For reference, with 3 lines and a month where we had video cel calls we never went above $75 for that month. Used to be Working Assets in the '80s. After Sprint's customer service devolved into pathetic, I switched back to Credo after many years away. It's probably not the least expensive option, but they donate a % to progressive causes. They have several different plans listed on their website. Pretty sure they piggyback on a major carrier. I have no complaints about their coverage, and their customer people are ridiculously, wonderfully helpful.~) Eddy Goldberg, Amherst -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'm basically happy with it, and have had two phones replaced under warranty (first a Nexus and then a Moto X4), which they honored--plus one replaced after theft, which I had to buy. At the time I got mine, you had to get a special phone (very limited selection). I think now you can use pretty much any phone. Keeping my existing number was no problem. My reason for switching from Consumer Cellular (which had great customer service and an AARP discount) was because CC doesn't support international calling AT ALL. Google works out of the box in over 100 countries--but what they don't tell you ahead is that it's 20 cents per minute. Still, it's great if you need to e.g. confirm a reservation, find out if a restaurant is open, or tell someone you're delayed in meeting them. And of course, for long calls, there are plenty of other options such as WhatsApp, Zoom, FaceTime, etc. If you never call internationally or have another way to do that, Consumer Cellular is a fine choice. They've been able to deal with our lines and plans no problem. They must have lowered their phone support staffing because, yes, you're on hold forever. As for service in the region, I've heard Sprint / T-Mobile doesn't have great penetration in our area. AT&T does, but not a strong signal, or at least it wasn't a few years back when I did a side-by-side comparison. Verizon has always had the best signal and reach, though of course these are the hills of western Mass. The side by side comparison I did was about five years ago at West County Equipment in the Greenfield industrial park. I was setting up emails on five staffer's phones. All were iPhones, either a 5 or a 6. One of the phones was AT&T. The rest were Verizon. The AT&T phone would not connect to the cell network until I walked over to a window and pressed it up against the glass. The Verizon phones had no problem sitting on the desk in the middle of that giant corrugated metal building. I was impressed. Wow! I am so happy to have the benefit of all your wisdom and experience. I?m not exactly surprised because Hidden Tech is always amazing, but I am so grateful to everyone who took the time to respond. I?m going to go through all your responses and make a list (I?m a list-maker) and then make some calls to see what kind of conversations I can have with Customer Service at all the options that were described. I?ll let you know what decision I make, of course. And, because the timing is interesting, today I got a ?final invoice? from ?regular? Verizon for $18.04, which includes some language threatening my credit score if I don?t pay up right away. I don?t think I actually owe them anything but I?m going to pay it so they will go away and leave me alone. I also got an invoice from Verizon Wireless for $4.61 which is due on 1/20/2022. I could ask why that amount but it?s probably not worth the time I would have to spend on hold to find out. Thanks again and Happy New Year! Lynne Lynne Rudi?
