I'm looking for someone who's super experienced with creating Word
templates.

 

I have a client who wants their letterhead in a Word template. 

I translated their printed letterhead into a Word doc, with headers /
footers, but I'm no whiz with the program.

I don't know how to create a template that will open a new document with the
template as a base, and with locks on the header & footer (so no one can
change it accidentally) and with a default font locked in.

 

Please contact me if this is in your wheelhouse.

When you have that document open in Word, click Save As, and then at the
bottom select Save As Word Template (*.dotx) and navigate to your template
folder and save it.
Typically the folder is at
C:\Users\<user-name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates

Once the template file is in that folder, when you click on New in the File
menu, that template will appear in Available Templates > My Templates.
When you click on it, it will create a new document using that template.

As far as I know, there is no way to prevent the changing elements in the
new document, but even if someone does, that won't affect the original
template which would be unchanged..

Today was the 2nd to last day of remote school and my 6yo broke the 
school's iPad 7 screen. Can anyone replace the screen for me if I buy 
the parts?

Otherwise, I'd appreciate your recommendation on where I can take it to 
be fixed.
Staples is $130 if just the digitizer is bad, $330 if digitizer & LCD. 
They send it out for a $50 diagnosis to determine which price point.
Yes Computers says, it being new with a limited warranty, all they can 
do is swap out the whole unit for $279.
Kiddo broke it while bending it out of a district-provided, poorly 
designed foam case and snapped the glass. The touch screen functionality 
is not compromised nor does the color look wonky anywhere, so the LCD 
doesn't seem to be broken.

Hi folks,

Is someone here knowledgeable about the legal right to use the likeness of
a public figure? In this case, it is Bill Gates, and the image is a
stylized high contrast black and white image of his face that is
recognizable as Gates. I am not up on these legal issues lately, and I let
my membership in the Graphic Artists Guild lapse years ago.

The situation is this: The t-shirt printer is refusing to print this image
on a batch of t-shirts unless 1) we get permission from Bill Gates and his
people or 2) we use a different image that is already in the public domain.

This job needs to get printed asap, and yes, we are looking for an
alternative printer who will not refuse to print the t-shirt as it stands,
while also trying to work this out with the current printer.

I will forward the image upon request. However, I think this is a
broad-stroke issue, not specific to the exact image we are using.

I?m no lawyer, so take this free advice for what it?s worth. My memory of my journalism law classes is that likenesses of public figures are free game for news purposes, but you may have to compensate the photographer or artist who produced the image. Use for commercial purposes is trickier, but unless you are doing something with the image that is actionable ? calling him something he isn?t with reckless disregard for the truth ? you?re pretty safe. My advice: Stay away from Q-Anon and the antivaxers, and you?re OK. Don?t waste your money on a lawyer. Bill Gates isn?t going to get himself in the newspapers suing a T-shirt company in Western Mass.

I wrote a magazine story once that put devil horns on Gates? head and a spark of lightning between his fingers. He never complained. At least not to me.

Actually, It depends on the image source, but, it?s not likely that any
image of Gates is old enough to fall into true public domain.


Altering an existing photo is likely a violation of the original
photographer?s or publisher's copyright. If you want to claim that your use
of the photo is fair use, because you?ve ?transformed? the existing
photograph of Gates, you?ll have to bear in mind that proving fair use is a
high bar. Many illustrators have violated copyrights because they didn?t
realize the redoing a photo in another medium does not constitute a
significant transformation.


However, copyright of the original image isn?t the only issue here. There?s
a bigger issue ? the right of publicity. Bill Gates as a celebrity gets to
control how his image is used. Laws governing the right to publicity are
state laws and so they vary state by state, but those laws all recognize
that, in general, people get to control how their image is used
commercially. (This is why photographers have to get model releases on
photos they license.) Celebrities can also invoke the right to privacy in
prohibiting their likeness being used without their authorization.


If the t-shirts are being made for sale, that?s another issue (and possibly
why the printer refused?they could be held liable as well as you, because
it?s merchandise).

my journalism law classes is that likenesses of public figures are free
game for news purposes, but you may have to compensate the photographer or
artist who produced the image. Use for commercial purposes is trickier, but
unless you are doing something with the image that is actionable ? calling
him something he isn?t with reckless disregard for the truth ? you?re
pretty safe. My advice: Stay away from Q-Anon and the antivaxers, and
you?re OK. Don?t waste your money on a lawyer. Bill Gates isn?t going to
get himself in the newspapers suing a T-shirt company in Western Mass.

I wrote a magazine story once that put devil horns on Gates? head and a
spark of lightning between his fingers. He never complained. At least not
to me.

Hello hidden-tech,

I?m looking for a dev to help with the following.

I help a small local non-profit with their website. We recently installed a donation plugin called ?GiveWP? which we got up and running fine on their website which was on WP 4.9. However, there is a functionality we need which requires it to run on WP 5.7.

We got 5.7 running on the staging site, but now we need to get it running on the production site.

There was some custom code made to Events Calendar Pro (currently on both staging 5.7 and production 4.9) and a non-supported plugin called Custom Menu Wizard (changes made only on staging running 5.7)

The scope as I see it (but I?m not a dev) would be:

1- make a backup on developer?s PC of actual live/staging
2- copy live to staging including everything (all databases)
3- make sure that the staging has copied OK and there are no problems
4- do all the possible updates on staging including the WordPress (there may be some updates I?ll need to get from prior dev who made some changes to ?Custom Menu Wizard? plugin which was not compatible with WP 5.7)
5- add the copied customizations (Events Calendar Pro and Custom Menu Wizard) to staging and make sure that they work ok.
6- once everything is updated and working OK on staging, copy the website to live
7- qc the live site and make any fixes if necessary

Is there anyone that could help us for a reasonable fee?

It sounds like something we can help you with. Can you clarify a few things:

- #4 - Are you saying the Custom Menu Wizard doesn't work with 5.7 or 
that the previous dev made changes to the plugin that don't work on 5.7? 
Can you elaborate?
- #5 - you said "add the copied customizations" -- if the customizations 
are currently on the live site, if it's copied to the staging they will 
still be there but just might need to be updated/fixed, yes?
- What hosting company/platform (cPanel?) is this on?

to research this, but as usual, am overwhelmed by the choices. I just want
something easy and simple and with good sound quality. Free is best, but if
there is a small monthly fee, that is fine.

(And yes, I am aware of the state laws regarding getting permission to
record.)

We have used Bamboo HR for about four years and Paychex for payroll for
even longer. Both have worked out very well. We are multi-state and
recently increased our payroll head count by over 100 and all went
smoothly. We also manage about a hundred contractors and need signed
contracts, IP protection documents, etc. If you would like to speak to our
HR person, she could elaborate more.

You can use Google Voice and press 4 during a call to record. The recording
initiation is announced to everyone in the call so it is legally compliant.

I used TriNet with a couple of companies. They were expensive but worth it if employees in many states and you are looking for premium product

Hi all

I have a client/friend with a Hotmail account she set up 25 (!!) years 
ago. It?s working on her Windows machine and her iPad. We?re wanting 
to migrate to a gmail account but the pass she thought works doesn?t. 
We attempted a password reset but she never received the email. (She 
says - I haven?t looked yet.) I know how to find password on a Mac but 
not on a Windows machine. A quick google offers lots of hack programs 
but I?m mistrustful?.

Is there a way to find out what pass she?s using? Is there a safe and 
reliable password retriever?

And you remember that Microsoft bought Hotmail..

you didn't say which browser she is using so I can be too specific,
Ever browser I know of has a password listing, usually an option in the 
settings dialog.

You probably need the machine user account login to get to it.

Hi, Folks.

Way back when I shared an office with Paul Bissex in Greefield, we had 
some GBH game designers nearby.? I don't remember their names, though.

I have an 8th grade student who is awesome at QA: he finds all the 
mistakes and confusing things in lessons and unit tests I give and is 
very clear and respectful in his description of them.? I would love to 
see him do a QA internship and get a letter of recommendation out of it, 
if he's as good as I think he is.

Can any of you reading this think of anyone who's doing game design and 
could use a remote QA intern for piecework?

Hi Greg,

I don't know of anyone locally, but I can highly recommend this man in
Arizona. He 3D printed a set of replacement knobs last year for my 1970s
vintage Ekornes recliner chair.

Sam was very professional, detail-oriented, he delivered the knobs when he
said he would and for a reasonable cost.

I have a desktop 3d printer (FlashForge) which I've used for years to 
make myself various parts.?? I'd be willing to print it for you and I 
live here in Millers Falls and work in Amherst, so I could meet you 
somewhere.? I'd print it for almost nothing.? Only question is if you 
have the STL file to process or if you need the part made.? If you need 
it made, you could do it yourself in www.tinkercad.com, which is free, 
and I've used it for years to make my simple parts.? No CAD experience 
necessary. Its very accurate when printing, so if it says 8mm, then it 
prints 8mm. If you give me the STL I can get it printed.

Hi All,

My client has an e-commerce site as well as an Amazon store for their 
products which are customized stamps (address stamps, etc.), which of 
course means that they purchase the stamp mechanism itself and create 
the insert for it. They prefer to advertise the type of stamp they use, 
since it's of very high quality and is a marketing plus, but Amazon's 
system is tagging it as an IP violation (this is not a complaint from 
anyone).

My client has a document from the manufacturer certifying that they 
approve of their name being used, but Amazon in its vast obliviousness 
just sends back a canned response to anything they send.

Anyone have any advice about this, or ideas about how to get past the 
Amazon roboguards to a real person?

There's a guy in South Hadley who does 3D. I'm blocking on his last name,

We had a similar problem to solve, and was suggested by Brian at About 
Face in Turners to buy a couple of ethernet-over-powerline units.

solution than piggybacking wifi to another wifi unit, especially over 
such a distance. There is no lag. We streamed the new Mulan in our 
backyard last fall using a Roku Express.

I've been using a TP Link extender for several months. I have no basis to
compare it to anything else. In general, it does make my Wi-Fi stretch
further into the house, but it is not problem-free. I still have signal
problems even close to the router extender.

I recently set up the TP-LInk Deco Mesh wifi system at a church and 
found it worked fantastic.? It has a far reach and really enhances the 
speed of the wifi across the entire building.? I got compliments on the 
speed of the system as well.? I think these new mesh networks for home 
use are really going to change the quality of the wifi.

We primarily encourage people to move away from Extenders and instead look
at replacing their router with a 2-3pc  Mesh router system.  The throughput
on the mesh systems results in generally better speeds, they are also
usually easier to setup.

The TP-link Deco mesh line is solid, easy to setup and manage, and usually
a good price point (they have a whole range).

That said, depending on the age of your router TP-link does have a OneMesh
system where certain routers can work with certain range extenders as if
they are part of a mesh network. It wont be quite as fast as an out of the
box mesh, but typical still quite good and more economical than buying all
new hardware.

The RE220 that you mention is not shown in that list, but the RE230, 300,
315, 505 and 550 are all listed.
They of course only pair with routers on that list as well.

I run a Tp-Link Deco system in my home, and have set up quite a lot of them
(or similar)  for customers.

I would definitely look toward mesh.

The house down here in FL is cinderblock construction, and WiFi does not 
penetrate. I played around with range extenders (netgear and TPlink) 
(and still have two in use for a guest network extender), but they ended 
up being a pain PARTICULARLY if you use the "Same SSID" feature. That 
just totally screws up handoffs.

I'm currently running Asus AIMesh (mostly because I use Asus routers). 
Works perfectly. I use "wired backhaul" (the nodes exchange data over 
cat5 and not over the air) and that just flies (though they will do 
over-the-air if you aren't wired, and that is generally fine as well).

Hi, Folks.

This week, Stone Soup's main fridge went down, and lost a LOT of food. 
Think 100 points of meat, on that order.

If there had been a temperature alarm, that wouldn't have happened. I'm 
thinking there are folks on this list who would be able to rig up a web 
pages that displayed the temperatures of all Stone Soup's refrigerators, 
and generate an email / SMS alert if they went outside a range.

Are there any such people out there?

Gauges are pretty simple - quick look at Amazon shows wifi connected 
gages at $40-50 each (with aps to read them)
IF they have wifi at all locations -- tying to alerts aren't that hard

Otherwise there are RF connected gauges that are under $10 each but 
tying to an alarm is a bit trickier.

Any idea how many units at how many locations - and if they have Wifi - 
and who to contact to set it up ?

Hi Hidden Tech Folk,
I switched to siteground hosting about 5 years ago.
My wish was for cPanel, and 24/7 phone tech support option which
siteround had at the time. Now they've made it ridiculously difficult
to access a tech support person throwing multiple steps in before
being able to access tech support. They've made unauthorized updates
to my site, and they have replaced cPanel with tier own proprietary
software.

I've become very leery of all the engineered disruption to my website,
and my web hosting.

Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions about this.
I think I'm looking to move my webhosting yet again, after my
webhosting was disrupted.

I currently use TekTonic for my VPS, on which I host several websites. *I*
don't use cPanel, although I understand that TekTonic provides for it. (I just
ssh into my VPS and manage it via the Linux command line.) I don't know what
TekTonic phone support is like, since I have never used it -- I use their
Web/Email ticket system, which has always been very responsive, so I am 
*guessing* their phone support would also be very responsive.  Down time is 
rare.
