From alan at 8wheels.org Sun May 3 21:28:20 2020 From: alan at 8wheels.org (Alan Frank) Date: Sun, 03 May 2020 17:28:20 -0400 Subject: [Hidden-tech] Python vs PHP Message-ID: <9e03130a6c0033ac59b4333aae41f3a1@8wheels.org> I am developing an online version of a commercial tabletop game. I am doing this for two main reasons--it's an interesting project and I hope to be able to gain and demonstrate skills which will help me get a job as a software developer. The initial version of the game (which you can see at http://www.8wheels.org/campagne) is written in PHP. Now that I have it working, I am getting ready to try out various machine learning techniques to improve its play. These will include using a genetic algorithm, converting the strategy module to use a neural network and training that, and doing lookahead, which is time-consuming, so I will use AWS Lambda to try out various possibilities in parallel. The question I have is whether to continue with PHP or convert the 1350 lines of code to Python. The reasons to convert are that Lambda does not have native support for PHP (a perplexing decision) and that many ML packages (particularly pytorch) are written in Python (might it also look better on my resume?). The reasons not to convert are that it's a fair effort and that I much prefer PHP to Python. There is also the possibility of keeping the UI portion in PHP and converting the logic to Python. I'd appreciate any insight or guidance. --Alan From paul at bissex.net Mon May 4 00:50:41 2020 From: paul at bissex.net (Paul Bissex) Date: Sun, 3 May 2020 20:50:41 -0400 Subject: [Hidden-tech] Python vs PHP In-Reply-To: <9e03130a6c0033ac59b4333aae41f3a1@8wheels.org> References: <9e03130a6c0033ac59b4333aae41f3a1@8wheels.org> Message-ID: <2635dde7-7bbb-e516-4e87-dbc9bf68db42@bissex.net> Hi Alan, As you know I'm a "Python guy" so my recommendation won't be a surprise. Here are some of my reasons: * If you want to learn ML you'll very likely use Python anyway. The dominant frameworks are in Python. Even people who dislike Python begrudgingly use it for ML because of the ecosystem. * PHP has grown a lot in the past 20 years but it's still not a general-purpose language; it's for writing web applications. This bites you in specific areas like ML or AWS Lambda support as you've seen already. * Keeping PHP for the UI and using Python for the back-end can be viable, whether as a final architecture or as an intermediary stage in a rewrite. * As your code base grows you may end up wanting things PHP lacks (generics, union types, method overloading). * Python is well known as being easy to pick up -- there are lots of stories of startups using it to create an MVP (minimum viable product) quickly, then finding that it meets their needs and they don't need to rewrite in whatever Real Programming Language they had in mind. * Python is great on the resume. It's huge in the web application and data science areas. In any case, good luck with your project! Perhaps someone on Hidden-tech has first hand experience they can pass along. My daughter is an MFA grad student, painter, and is looking for a projector that is inexpensive, reasonably good quality, and will work with an iPhone XR, an older iPad and a 5 year old MacBook. She wants to use it for projecting images on a wall or canvas for artwork or for presentation of artwork. It should have the ability to do keystone correction as one feature. It should be relatively compact, although that isn't a paramount requirement. I would like to see reviews that are pertinent to the Mac ecosystem and ideally pertinent to use by artists. Reviews that are centered on PCs and business applications aren't likely to sway me. -- --------------- Chris Hoogendyk - O__ ---- Systems Administrator c/ /'_ --- Biology & Geosciences Departments (*) \(*) -- 315 Morrill Science Center ~~~~~~~~~~ - University of Massachusetts, Amherst --------------- Erd?s 4 From shel at principledprofit.com Sun May 10 12:00:00 2020 From: shel at principledprofit.com (Shel Horowitz) Date: Sun, 10 May 2020 08:00:00 -0400 Subject: [Hidden-tech] Gmail question Message-ID: Even after using GMail for well over a decade, I still find it very unintuitive. For the past 1.5 years I've been running a linux instance to receive, process, store, and relay data from a network of devices with a modest but not trivial data rate of ~2000 UDP messages/sec, or ~100kbytes/sec. Until recently it has been problem-free, but in the last month or two I've lost control of instances twice -- first a dev/test instance, but over the past weekend the production server. These instances have suddenly stopped relaying data, become unreachable via SSH (standalone and browser-based EC2 instance connect), stopped responding to web requests, and ignored reboot commands from the EC2 console. While I have managed to get things back on track, with some not-very-timely assistance from AWS support (I pay the $30/mo for the basic level of service), I feel the need to: * understand better what has gone wrong and what, if anything, I can do to prevent future occurrences * learn and adopt best practices for managing instances, images, volumes, snapshots -- and probably other things I don't yet know about -- to maximize reliability, to simplify monitoring and management, and to ensure trouble-free restoration of service when things do go south In short, I'm looking to up my game from daily offsite db backups, monthly instance snapshots, crossed fingers, and an ongoing sense of unease to a more purposeful, organized, and stress-free approach. As I have to date, I could eventually accomplish this on my own by reading EC2 documentation, doing web/forum searches, etc. But in this moment I want to speed up the process, and I think having the ability to talk through issues and ask questions (and get clear, succinct, and reliable answers!) will be more effective for me than ploughing through lots of web resources. So... looking to hire someone to work with me for what I expect to be a relatively brief overall time commitment (2? 5? 10? hours) to meet the two bulleted objectives above. Although much of what I need may be the same for all operating systems, I want to work with someone having specific expertise with linux EC2 instances. Please contact me with your availability, rates, and level of experience/expertise. If I have failed to provide important information to assess my general needs at this stage, please let me know so I can post again with those details. Manny also sells a wonderful line of Greek olives and olive oil via River Valley Co-op and I met The Man Himself when he was demoing there. Perhaps they would let you put in an advance order; you probably won't need a stand-alone freezer until at least July anyway. We actually bought a freezer from them last August. One thing I liked is that they offered an in-between model that was the right size for us. It's an Insignia, slightly above 22 inches in both length and width, and I think it holds 5.2 cu ft. This was a good size for a two-person household with an active garden. We filled it completely by the end of October, and emptied it completely and unplugged it last month. We almost bought a much larger one online that would have been too big for the space. The freezer in our fridge is still fairly crowded, because we moved everything out of the chest freezer once we had room to combine. It worked well. There was a small amount of ice buildup but after we unplugged it I left it wide open for three or four days and it first melted, then evaporated. During this off-time, I'm closing it but with a rag between the hatch and the freezer body, so it can't fully close (and won't go moldy). "No problem!" I thought, figuring I'd just buy a new one in FL.. Even back then, none of the local shops in FL had any.. finally ended up snagging one at Best Buy, but even they are out now. So something like Craigslist (as others have noted) is likely to be your only choice in the short term. Great guy, run a clean honest business and I am sure they deliver https://www.contractorshomeappliances.com/index.html In case anyone else is in the market for a freezer (chest or upright), please know that they are estimating that it will be mid-June or into July before it arrives, as there has been a delay in shipments from China due to the virus, and there has been a run on freezers since the beginning of the state of emergency/stay-at-home orders started. Even used freezers on Craigslist went like hotcakes; they were claimed within a half hour of posting. FYI, there are reports of concerns about food shortages, esp. meat. A friend?s 94 year old mom is in a nursing home in Shelton, CT, and she is dying. She is down to 71 pounds and isn't eating. Due to the Covid-19 situation, my friend is getting a runaround regarding being able to see her mom, either in the same room or through the window, as they have been allowing some people to do. Her mom has dementia and is having anxiety about not being able to see her daughter, too. These last several days have been filled with many many phone calls, emails and texts, where widely varying information is being given to my friend as to her mom's health status. Sometimes the staff is saying that her mom is doing much better, and she is not ?actively dying? (their term, not mine), and then 12 hours later, they flip the story. Hospice is also involved and they are also not providing full information. My friend just wants their permission to go visit her mom asap; it could be her last time. If anyone has suggestions towards this situation, please write me either on- or off-list. (I admit, if it were me, I would be driving the 2 1/2 hours to confront the staff directly, but my friend has a different way of doing things, and I told her I would reach out to others for knowledge and suggestions.) There is no money for a lawyer if that is a suggestion. :-( Thanks very much, Deb -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We typically setup customers with the Motorola Docsis 3.0 or 3.1 modems (depending on internet speed) and then a basic Wireless N Router or a 2-3 cube mesh system depending on their house size and needs. The xFi pods are basically a limited mesh router that Require using a comcast modem/router combo as well. The downside being that they dont replace the cable modem you are renting, they are in addition. Usually a non wireless cable modem is much cheaper, and a good Mesh Router system (like the xFi "extender" packs) are a little more than the xFi pods, but generally better and more feature rich. A separate router will always provide better WiFi performance. More important, it provides flexibility to adapt your WiFi network to your particular environment. You can buy a Docsis 3.0 modem certified compatible with Comcast/Xfinity for under $70 and a high throughput dual band router for under $100, although you can spend quite a bit more for a high-speed gaming router or a mesh system, if that's what you want or your situation requires. Without knowing a lot more about your layout and usage I can't give you any specific recommendations, but you will certainly save money AND get better WiFi performance by buying your own modem and router. It works much better, it costs way less money, it does not give your internet connection out to any random people walking by (as Comcast's does.) Personally, I think eero's wifi system is the easiest to use mesh network out there. I have a three-piece set, which consists of a base and two additional plug-in routers (they're quite small) for something like $180. This covers a 3 story house as well as the entire back yard, all the way out to my car, in reliable, perfect wifi. I'm sure smaller areas could get by with just a single base. For cable modems, I've used Motorola's SB series in the past but after consistent issues with one model, I have switched to a Netgear modem - I think it's the CM130. Highly recommended. When I use the ASUS extenders, I always connect them back to the main router with a CAT cable instead of the WiFi signal. I turn to this friendly and knowledgeable group often for advice. I agree with Rich that WordPress is a terrific platform. I have never heard of it not working on a site, though if your host company doesn't support it, you'd need to do a manual installation (there are people on this list who could help you with that). Most webhosts have one-click WordPress installation in their CPanels. You do need to know some things about WP before you set up. - There is WordPress.com, which is hosted on THEIR servers, and WordPress.org, where your content is hosted on YOUR server (you don't have to own your server--let your hosting company do that). You want .ORG, so you have full control over the content and cant be held hostage over it. Neither one charges money. - WordPress is a very simple shell that uses "themes" to determine the look and feel. There are thousands of themes out there, some at no cost and others for a fee. Find one you like, but play with it to see how easy it is to work. There are some that nest text inside Java routines as one example) and I have found it's really tough to find the place I need to be to make minor edits. - Editing in WordPress is really easy, assuming you picked a theme that didn't have the issue I just described. The interface is similar to Microsoft Word or GMail if you turn off the blocks feature. So you don't have to learn any HTML. Instead of e.g. your bold text, you just highlight the text and click the B button in the formatting ribbon. - Find and install a few key plugins: a backup program so if WP utterly collapses, you still have your content; a file-namer that gives your posts a meaningful name taken from your headline, probably some others - WordPress updates frequently, both to add function and to beef up security. Set yours up to automatically run the updater, but remember to check every now and then to see if you need to update your plugins. Updating is just a few clicks and very intuitive. - You have a choice every time you post new content: a post, which goes at the top of your blog (which posts in reverse chronological order so the newest is on top) or a page, which is part of your permanent website structure and can be organized with menus, etc. Posts can also be sorted by category, so your reader can see everything you've put in any particular category just by clicking on the category name. I find it very worth the extra few minutes to add categories, keyword tags (which help people find your post), a picture, and an excerpt. - Consider having a designer set up the site to begin with, making sure they know you want a theme that's easy to edit posts, and then posting your own content from there. You might want to consider MailChimp's free plan for managing your subscriber list. No need to bring JotForm or another third party into the mix. Looks like you're hosting on Network Solutions. My experience with clients who were on Netsol has been that they were paying 2 to 4 times above the norm and the performance and control panel were so poor they moved house when they upgraded. If the pricing is good and you can easily install WP, I say stay; otherwise, definitely move on. A few things to keep in mind when moving your site to WP (or any other platform): 1. Make sure redirects are set up for your .html pages to help search engines index the new pages and keep your rankings. 2. Do not just copy and paste your current code into WordPress. It needs to be cleaned up and modernized. You will want to make use of heading tags etc instead of spans with inline styles. This is for accessibility, SEO, maintainability, and portability. It's just how HTML is meant to be used. 3. Avoid opening links in new windows as much as possible. It's pretty common to do so for external links and PDFs, but should be avoided 100% of the time for internal links. Trust people to use the back button. 4. Use a simple SEO plugin to improve your page descriptions in search engine results. 5. As others mentioned: backups and updates. They're simple enough to do yourself, or cheap enough to get someone to manage them for you. Setting it up and moving your content over can be done in a few hours. A number of people on HT have lots of experience with this and could help out, myself included! Feel free to contact me directly if you want assistance. What you get for what you pay also relates to how much you can sort out yourself -- in other words you pay for ease of use, as is only fair. In general, many of us have moved off NetSol (who used to own the net world) as the competition developed. BTW, domain shouldn't cost more than $10/yr and be sure to keep control, not pass it to a hosting company. As for simple vs flexible - looking at your existing site, I see lots of areas where you used other services or just posted PDFs where you might want to develop as you found it useful -- it's a whole lot more work to add features later if you don't have the right platform. Since you are a consulting business what looks like it has significant intellectual property,? that is a good option to keep open. good Luck Rich On 5/27/2020 10:10 AM, Roger Magnus via Hidden-discuss wrote: > Thank you Rich.? First, I don?t use Word for anything of my own but I have clients who send me Word documents so that I can cut and paste the text into my layout files. I am currently working on a pro bono project for an organization I belong to. The Word document I have received is mostly ?regular? text but there are a few pages that are simple charts that I need to format appropriately. The problem is that when I click on a chart in the Word document it acts as though it is a small spread sheet and I am unable to extract the content as plain text. I am told that there is an easy way to extract the text but no one in the organization has been able to tell me how to do it. If someone on this awesome list can help me out I would be very grateful. Yes, I know about the back button, but "going back" can be painfully slow with a dialup connection (between images, css, and js files loading any page is painfully slow, so I avoid reloading pages whenever I can avoid it). Also, I almost always right-click/"Save Link As" for PDFs (I *never* view PDFs in my browser, in fact I have disabled that -- I *always* download PDFs and view them with a local pdf viewer (xpdf).) Yes I follow links [internal or external] in the same window where there is a clear [single] thread, but when I come to a "multiple" path (eg a "fork in the road"), I will open in a new window. Oh, I never use tabs (I *hate* tabs and prefer to actually use my window manager -- I have it there for that reason). > > Shel Horowitz - "The Transformpreneur" > ________________________________________________ > Contact me to bake in profitability while addressing hunger, > poverty, war, and catastrophic climate change > * First business ever to be Green America Gold Certified > * Inducted into the National Environmental Hall of Fame > * Certified speaker: International Platform Association > http://goingbeyondsustainability.com > mailto:shel at greenandprofitable.com 413-586-2388 > Award-winning, best-selling author of 10 books. > Latest:Guerrilla Marketing to Heal the World > (co-authored with Jay Conrad Levinson) > > Watch my TEDx Talk, > "Impossible is a Dare: Business for a Better World" > http://www.ted.com/tedx/events/11809 > (move your mouse to "event videos") > _________________________________________________ > > > > On Wed, May 27, 2020 at 11:31 AM Greg Perham via Hidden-discuss < > hidden-discuss at lists.hidden-tech.net> wrote: > > > Hi Roger, > > > > +1 for WordPress. > > > > You might want to consider MailChimp's free plan for managing your > > subscriber list. "Opening new tabs of the same website is redundant and confusing. If it?s the same website but a different page, users will use the navigation menu to navigate back or elsewhere if they need. Keeping users in the same tab helps them better understand the navigation flow of your site." https://uxmovement.com/navigation/why-external-links-should-open-in-new-tabs/ "Whether or not you personally prefer links to open in a new tab or the same tab, it all boils down to user experience. User interface is the way your site looks and user experience is the way a reader interacts with your site. Now, if it?s about how your users, how in the world do you make them all happy when there is clearly one option and also the exact opposite of that option? How do you choose which to provide? Do: respect the expected, default behavior of the browser. Don?t: take control away from the user in order to give them what you think they want." https://www.oncecoupled.com/internal-link-tab/ Best, Alex *Just Peachy* On Thu, May 28, 2020 at 11:25 AM Robert Heller via Hidden-discuss < hidden-discuss at lists.hidden-tech.net> wrote: > At Wed, 27 May 2020 21:38:16 -0400 Shel Horowitz < > shel at principledprofit.com> wrote: > > > > > > > > > "3. As a user, I have to say that I hate it when I have to follow a back-button trail through five or six pages and then often as not, never get back to the page I was on because it calls the website differently (and presents me with e.g. a thank-you page when I never completed the action). So as a website owner, especially if the link is in the middle of a page that I'd like people to read all the way through, I often open new tabs/windows with internal links, and pretty much always with external links. I think people creating a blog would want to have some info on things like how links function. People who aren't making web pages can ignore this. I have to agree with Greg, I find links that open new browser windows/tabs for pages on the same site (other than for a specific reason such as a PDF or for security purposes) annoying and chaoic. And yes, on a slow connection (or if you're a browsing maniac like me) it's a great idea to open up new pages in a different tab so you can keep reading on the first page while the next page loads, or to keep track of pages you want to refer back to. The great thing is, we don't need to set all of our links to open in a new window just for those poor souls on dialup. Anyone who wants to open a link in a new browser window, all they have to do is right-click on the link and select Open in New Window or Open in New Tab, or just hold down the shift key as they click on the link to open in a new window. As far as using the back button, as a web developer I try not to make viewers use the back button at all - it's called a "bucket" in web design (as in "stuck at the bottom of a bucket") when you have to either scroll up to the top of the page or use the back button to continue exploring. It's time consuming and creates a subtle deterrent. Three techniques I can think of that designers use: 1. A "back to top" floating button or a "Back to top" link at the bottom. (Here's a link to a tutorial on creating a link that jumps to a different part of the page https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/jump-link-same-page) 2. Links to the next pages a person might be interested in (creating paths). 3. A floating navigation bar that stays at the top of your browser. A lot of themes in WordPress include a floating back to top button and/or floating navigation bar as an option, and a lot of WordPress page builders include an option to jump to page elements. I had a case in the past where one client would be unable to receive some emails from one of their customers. Emails sent during the day came through fine. Emails in the evening would be blocked. After some review of the mailserver logs I saw that the sender was trying to send email from home using Comcast's mail server, which was not included in their DNS' SPF record, which specifies which mail servers are allowed to send email "FROM:" their domain. Comcast wasn't in the list. My client asked me to fix it. I said their customer needed to stop using Comcast's mail server, or their IT person needed to include Comcast in their SPF record. That would fix the problem. So, I guess one question that can be asked is... are you using the correct mail server, as specified in the SPF record of your DNS? This is what mine looks like: @ IN TXT ("v=spf1 ip4:216.144.202.99 ip4:216.144.202.140 ip4:216.144.210.10 -all") Translated to English, this means "treat all email that doesn't come from these three email servers as spam and delete them." I'm sorry if my quote of his post left that ambiguous. And yes, it's easy to open new windows/tabs while browsing. I do this constantly, especially when I want to refer to two pages at once (which happens a lot while I'm researching a writing piece, among many other scenarios) or dealign with a slow-loading site. My UX concern is that I've seen too many sites where hitting the back button didn't take you back to where you'd been, and too many situations where you really want to make sure the reader comes back to finish the page, and there is zero guarantee they'll do it on their own. For example, I would put a "help" link in a new tab. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [Hidden-tech] Looking for Free or Low Cost Blog Platform and Thoughts about Jotform for Registering New Subscribers Date: 28.05.2020 15:54 From: Shel Horowitz via Hidden-discuss To: Robert Heller Yes, Greg was taking about designers choosing to have links open in new windows or tabs. I'm sorry if my quote of his post left that ambiguous.
