If you can't trust your coworker not to save the videos against your wishes, then hire them to do the editing and include terms that forbid them from keeping copies after they finish editing. If you can't trust them to honor the contract, perhaps find someone else to edit your video :) -- I try to write short, functional emails. For the past several weeks, once I publish a blog post, I can't edit it. Whenever I go into edit mode, I get "This block has encountered an error and cannot be previewed." Fortunately, I don't have that problem if I've saved-as-draft. WordPress 5.3.2, and it happens on both Mac and PC platforms. 2. I just bought an HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148fdw all-in-one printer. I am not using the fax capability but printing and scanning. My computer for scanning has been my ancient (2009, I think) Mac desktop running OS10.5.8 and unable to support any later OS. I like this computer because it has lots of room on the hard drive and a nice big monitor. However, HP was not able to find me any scanner software that would work on this machine. They tried to talk me through doing it in the built-in Image Capture app, but it wouldn't locate the printer (which is connected to my router via Ethernet). The three more recent laptops are all able to talk to it, and the desktop Mac is able to print to it with a generic PostScript printer. The printer's HP EasyScan scanner software on the modern Mac is actually really elegant, but I'll settle for clunky. Anyone know how I can get my hands on old software that would operate the scanner form the old Mac? Personally, I'd run it on in perl on a linux server - I use Mail::POP3Client - it's a pretty easy script. And then run a "delete all older than 90 days" script, on a regular basis (or 120 or even 365) You can probably run that on a perl on a mac (or windows) box. Since mac actually has a real unix shell, it's extra easy. Depending on the access to your server - it could also be as easy as do a tar or zip on the mailbox directory, that requires direct admin access to mail server. Message-ID: Oy. I just discovered that the section of the home page of frugalfun.com about my Penny-Pinching Hedonist ebook has a link to a long-dead shopping cart. I opened up the file manager in Hostgator and went to edit the index file, but the link is not showing up on that page, and neither is the text around it. I tried several searches both of the frugalfun.com subfolder and the entire public.html folder, but the search function in Hostgator's software seems to be broken. No matter what I searched for on that page or other pages, it came up with zero results. How do I track down the file so I can replace the bad link? Thanks, as always. A much quicker approach is to use this: https://buddypress.org/ I think it already does what you are suggesting - it's a WP plugin I've used it and it's pretty easy to install and does have a measure of security. 3) The real question would be how to get some collaboration instead of lots of different systems. I'll point to the FRCOG - Franklin Regional Council of Governments whose charter just that. and they have been working on various emergency planning efforts. I'll send this their way and see if there is something that we all can contribute to. This exchange is a great illustration of that. In my own business, resume writing is one component. This week, noting that thousands of people in our area and hundreds of thousands Nationwide are suddenly unemployed and that the in-person while-u-wait resumes that we have done for 35 years are no longer viable, I moved them to zoom. I never thought I would be doing while you wait resumes remotely. Hopefully this is something that my business can do to make people's lives easier in this crazy time. For the next iteration, WP has a lot of potential. You have the full capability of MySQL (give or take shared hosting limitations) so it's more a matter of finding an existing plugin/tool that does what you need or creating a custom solution. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... All of the references which I have been able to find on machine learning are for training against static data sets or solitaire games. I have some ideas on how to do what I want, but not necessarily using state-of-the-art techniques. I used a tax accountant for a few years, when my returns were more complicated. I have always paid Massachusetts state income tax (and Federal, of course), but never to another country or another state. Basically, I pay taxes in the state where the income was earned. Not sure if there are different rules for consultants vs. employees, however (but I doubt it). So my advice, if you are an employee, would be to contact the company who hired you with this question, as they will probably know the answer (unless they too have never done this before :) On Wed, 25 Mar 2020 12:15:21 -0400, Aaron E-J via Hidden-discuss wrote: > You probably need to do tax forms for the state your employer resides > in, as well as MA. Besides something really obvious like rebooting the computer, I am not sure. There is a chance if the drive is old, it has reached its end of life. If it is a spinning HDD rather than an SSD, that may be what's happening. Or the circuitry for the external might be old, which is simpler to fix. You just move the hard drive to a new enclosure. FireWire drives nowadays are fairly old, so this isn't that uncommon, and often it doesn't affect the underlying drive. You can resolve this by getting a different 3.5" case (they tend to run $20-50, generally higher for FireWire), disassembling your external drive case, and putting the drive in the new case-- but you'll need to make sure it's the right style for your drive (SATA II/SATA III, etc) Hopefully the problem isn't the drive itself: if it is, you'll probably need a professional. A symptom of this would be that you hear it click rhythmically or if it suddenly makes loud individual "honks". If the problem is corruption or data errors on the drive, a fantastic piece of software called DiskWarrior can often help, but this will do nothing if the problem is physical in nature. DiskWarrior has saved more drives than I can count: it's definitely one of the best and most reliable utilities I own. A data recovery expert has access to all of these tools and would most likely be able to resolve the issue, whatever it is, for around $200. My tax advisor has consistently guided me (15+ years) that if I provide services for clients in other states, while I'm currently *in* MA, then only MA has nexus (my income from that client is only taxable in MA). But if I physically travel to the other state and provide services to that client FROM that state, then that state also has nexus (if they have a state income tax) and I would need to file an income tax return for that state. Keep in mind that income taxes paid to other states are deductible from your MA income tax bill, so you don't get double-charged. It's just a hassle to file more tax returns, in particular since the non-resident returns require you to apportion your income...the calculations are time-consuming. Good luck! I'm not a designer and I don't play one on TV ;-). But I *am* a copywriter and I see several issues with the copy that should be fixed before you even bring in a designer. - The audience is unclear. I don't even know if this product is for home, industry, academia, retail--let alone what sorts of people within an organization would be reading it. - If the audience is end users, the copy is much too technical. And even if the copy is water management professionals, it's very low on the benefits and expects the users to figure out on their own why they need this device. - It has no "ask"--nothing to encourage a prospect to take the next step Of course, I can fix all of that, quickly and inexpensively. Let me know if you'd like more information. I don't really trust either Google or Facebook with my personal data. They know far too much already, and I'd rather be working with a company that is independent of them (and of Microsoft, so Skype is not my best choice either) 2. The interface is reasonably intuitive 3. In my experience, it is fairly robust. Yes, the connection will go funky sometimes, but much less often than Skype and without losing the call completely. 4. Recording option is built in (I had bought a stand-alone Skype recorder years ago) BTW, if you only have one other person on the call, freebie Zoom DOESN'T cut off after 40 minutes. But if you have three or more, it does, and with no warning. Message-ID: Hi Hters, Of course colds and flues continue, and I'm curious if people know of a strange, weak cold that, for me anyway, just makes me tired, and has been going for about 2 weeks now. Had a very minor sore throat for 2-3 days in the first, and brief minor fevers coming and going in the first week. Also bouts of Tinnitus. A friend working at a high security, Fed-related job had the exact same symptoms, and was immediately double tested to find no Covid-19, so I'm quite sure I'm clear. Anyway, I'd be curious if you;ve had or know people who have had something like this. Unless your friend is the /only/ person you have ever interacted with in the past 2-4 weeks, including going to the store. However, I have had a lot of the same things you are describing (minor congestion, tinnitus, a bit tired [that goes to really, really sleepy around 2-4pm, to the point where I can't stay awake unless I stand up and walk around]) for a while now and I am pretty sure all these symptoms are unrelated.? I could be wrong though.? If I have a need to interact with a vulnerable population I'll try to get tested first. I've heard there is a new test coming out that can show whether you have a virus in the coronafamily (also includes the cold and SARS I think) in 15 mins. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <41185B5A-2992-40F0-8A2A-951993A37A03@clarity-first.com> Rob, I have had very similar symptoms. 3 weeks ago I came down with a raging sore throat, chills and super low energy, but no fever. I went to bed for 1 1/2 days and the symptoms subsided - except for the low energy. It feels like the first 8 hours of a cold or flu, the feeling that precedes getting sick. But it doesn?t really impact my performance. I am still working 8-10 hours a day, and last week I xc-skied in VT with the manager of our ski area (the trails were groomed but the lodge was closed and we all kept 6 ft. apart.) He is a monster skier and I had no problems keeping up wit him. However, that evening I did feel unusually low energy and experienced minor chills. Thursday I considered skiing again (likely the last snow of the year) but decided not to because I felt so low juice. I NEVER turn down a day of swing if there is snow on the ground, especially the end of the season. The good news is that even these symptoms seem to be subsiding. They are still noticeable, but they are lessening. Debbie and I are practicing 100% social isolation, with our son doing our shopping for us. All three of my adult kids are convinced that I?ve had the virus all along, before I started to isolate (just 1 week ago). If there were a simple test I?d like to do it. I wouldn?t be surprised to find antibodies there. If this is as bad as it gets then I would consider myself very, very lucky. I wanted to share it with everyone on this list for free: https://courses.projectmindfulness.com/courses/the-access-concentration-course?coupon=thankyouforsupporting Please reach out if you have any questions - this stuff really works :) Hope everyone is staying safe. I planned to write more today, but alas the darn illness had me bed-bound again. The symptoms noted here and in my other conversations are close enough to assign high-ish probability that they stem from the same infective agent. I spoke with my friend who got tested, and unfortunately there's less overlap that I thought--mainly, his passed quickly, and less fatigue, while it seems this one comes and goes over at least two weeks. Two days ago I thought I was done, and, wow, full vibrancy is so remarkable when it returns, but the affliction has returned, heading into three weeks now. I wanted to supply more links to reliable science in this email and spend time confirming the stats below, but I lost more time to sleep. Upshot is that the biases emerging from corruption at the WHO (mostly earlier) and at the CDC, the biases of great financial and political interests, and the huge forces of denial to which we are all variously subject, make it crucial to get a good cheat sheet of facts as established by qualified researchers who are subject to minimal financial incentives towards one conclusion or another. A big fork in current science has occurred in the last week or so. The prevailing science shows, for example, that the US peak is weeks away, at least 60% of our population will be infected within a year, of which 13% to 20% will need hospitalization, and 1.5% to 3.5% of infected will die. The new fork holds that the SARS-2 virus actually spread much more already, which lines up with the RO range of 4 to 6.7 (average # that one person infects) posited by a major brain trust at Los Alamos in mid to late February. This fork argues that therefore substantially less hospitalization and death are coming. An excellent but rather demanding video put a big torpedo in this new fork, but the ship isn't sunk and can withstand, barely, the second torpedo from understanding the above-noted forces of bias. If this new fork is true, then this peculiar illness we discuss here could be Covid-19 or an expression of one of the many (not just the main 2 or 3) mutations circulating now. In the last few days, slight but worrisome data has emerged suggesting that recovery does not prevent re-infection, but assuming that that data does not pan out, I too rather hope I have covid-19, and won't get worse. If this is the case, once tests are available to detect antibodies, I'd be cleared to help at the hospital or wherever. However, all things considered I lean towards the conclusion that this peculiar illness some of us have now is just a strange cold. I've known of other colds that come and go like this, and I and my brother had one once that lasted close to two months. If you don't already, I advise that you follow the two excellent daily ~25 minute videos summarizing the science and resulting best practices: Dr. John Campbell. A wonderfully avuncular, totally qualified British doctor. Peak Prosperity. This local (Montague, MA) PH.D. in pathology has for years run a "doom porn" site. He did called the housing crisis 2 years before it, but then got the financial markets and economy dead wrong (to be fair, most investing pros don't understand that this time it really is true that "This Time is Different" in financial markets because of Fed money printing institutionalized). For the pandemic he was pretty much 100% right in his predictions in late January. He surfaces excellent research and shows how egregiously wrong are some official and even scientists' publications. Rob, I have had very similar symptoms. I agree with the importance of mask wearing everywhere no matter if you have obvious symptoms or not. Everything points to it. Countries that do it are flattening the curve. It just makes sense. People are confusing this idea with taking away masks from doctors. That's a misunderstanding. This is about any homemade mask. Anyone can do it and there's no shortage of scrap material. Doctors are endorsing this. Luckily more people are wearing them in stores around here and the social stigma is going down. The more I see of this, the more hopeful I feel. I agree we can't wait for government orders to do it. They are responding too late. I too am hoping for an antibody test soon because I think it's possible many of us have had it already. And it seems the odds are very high that it will have at least some immunity, at least to some strains, which is something. [image: Screen Shot 2020-03-30 at 6.12.35 PM.png] Thank you. I figured that I'd ask on the support forums. To do this requires an account, so I tried to register. I was able to enter my desired username, but then got a 502 error after pressing Submit (or the equivalent). Nonetheless, I got an e-mail with a link to complete my registration, but clicking on that link--maybe a minute or two after it was generated--gave a message that it was expired. This was all on Chrome. I tried again on Firefox and also got the 502 error. Any suggestions on how to register, how to ask my question, or how to let WordPress know about my registration issue? I suppose I could ask a friend who is already registered to post the support issue for me, but getting my own account would be preferable. I did not post this to fish for a solution to the original problem, but in case anyone is curious, the issue is that wp-load.php calls wp(), which fails because the function is not defined. Grepping the directory does not show it as being defined anywhere. There is no ?> at the end of that file, so I thought that maybe it had been truncated, but the original on Github looks the same. A similar question was posted a couple of years ago on the WP support forum and the issue was that wp-config.php had been blanked, but that is not the case here. --Alan From markdhamill at gmail.com Tue Mar 31 14:52:20 2020 From: markdhamill at gmail.com (Mark D. Hamill) Date: Tue, 31 Mar 2020 10:52:20 -0400 Subject: [Hidden-tech] Book publishing Message-ID: My manuscript is nearing completion. I'm waiting on cover art. Meanwhile, I'm looking at how to self publish it. I expect most people will download electronic copies. Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), an Amazon subsidiary, has a pretty straightforward process, but I don't want to necessarily limit it to only Amazon. I know there are more generic format like EPUB. Basically, I want flexibility and wide reach. So I'm looking for some hand holding and don't mind paying for the privilege. I'll hawk in on my website and advertise it on appropriate websites, but I assume I'll need some sort of store. If the store if not on my website, that's fine. It needs some sort of centrally managed solutions so people can easily buy it, download it in the format they choose, elect to get paper copies both B&W and color I assume, with a site that keeps track of sales, updates and overall management. Appreciate any referrals. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
