Avidemux, already mentioned, is a bit quirky but more stable now,and very good.Xmedia Recode is another "cutter" type of editor/processor designed to work with individual files rather than create a sequence.The main advantage is that they will extact a portion as-is and simply copy that data without re-encoding, so processing is as fast as copying data and there is no quality loss. Both of those I believe are Windows only and free, but there may be similar utilities on the Mac side as well. Handbrake has a very good encoder, but might also have the option simply copy to not re-encode.
