My new new Macbook has three users on it, each with the old old data 3 times, and the old data 2 times and the new new data once. This sucks. Almost all my memory is used up. How big is your external drive? That certainly sounds like a way to proceed. I think I?d try it in batches. And I did a bit of google search and didn?t find an answer but maybe someone here knows - I think you have to get the files out of their separate user accounts to be able to manage them together. Another thought - don?t try to manage the duplication - just have the files on an external drive and when you need an old file go and get it. My two cents. Once this is done, I would make a bootable copy of your MacBook drive using software such as Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner. Once the bootable drive has been created, you might consider booting from this drive to verify that works. Once this bootable drive has been verified, shut down your mac and disconnect any attached drives. After the attached drives have been disconnected, you can power back on the machine and start deleting user's and contents to free up space with the knowledge that you have two backups just in case something goes sideways. Regarding data backups, remember the mantra, two is one and one is none. After you have freed up space on your MacBook, use another external drive for active time machine backups of your cleaned up Mac. Depending on the importance of the data, it may be worth considering keeping an encrypted bootable backup drive in another location. I hope this helps a bit. Please feel free to reach out off-list if you would like clarification regarding any of the above. As 2nd drive is the best solution. There are various 'diff' versions that can do bulk and sub-directory comparisons. Well worth having. Also, I have found switching from iPhoto to Photo appears to leave a large number of complex working files, sorting that out now. In general, images and worse videos is what fills up a disk, it takes 1000's of documents to take the same place as one video. Also, if the older machine backup includes system images and/or downloaded installers (usually many copies) those can be deleted - they are of no use. Advanced technical help is often very warned, think about it - few people have a car without regular use of a shop. Computers are equally or more complex. Here?s a process you might use. 1. Download Grand Perspective , a free app that will show graphically what?s taking up the most space. DaisyDisk is similar, and costs $10. 2. Run either one of those apps to show what?s on your Mac and it will show you the largest files. Move them to your backup disk (if you still need them, otherwise delete them), then delete them from your Mac (and empty the trash). 3. If you have 12,000 jpgs you could just move all of them to a photos folder on the external drive, too. 4. Then get an app like Gemini 2 , which will find and delete duplicate files on your Mac. (You can also run it on the external hard drive to get rid of duplicates there). 5. Clean My Mac is another very good app that gets rid of lots of built-up ?system junk" and other files you don?t need. It?s good for regular maintenance and will often create a huge amount of space. 6. Go to Settings > iCloud and set it to hold your photos in the cloud so they are not taking up space on your Mac. You can get 50gb of storage for a dollar a month, or 200gb for $3/month. You can also store other files (documents, etc) in the cloud. You will see small versions of the photos in the Photos app, but they won?t be taking up so much space and they will be safer in the cloud, too. 7. You might need help getting rid of the duplicate accounts, since the apps mentioned above will only check one account at a time. If you make an appointment at the Apple store it won?t cost you anything. 8. Once you have your machine in good order, duplicate files gone and large files moved to the backup drive, you want to keep things orderly. Maybe you want to buy a second 2 TB hard drive and use Disk Utility to split it into two virtual drives. Use one half for Time Machine backups and use the other for occasional Super Duper backups of your Mac. The Apple store might be able to help with this, too. Most people are terrible at backing up their stuff. Here?s a basic approach . Good luck! Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"; Format="flowed" Well that sounds like a nightmare. One wire, multiple users, not really much different from the *early* days of Ethernet. That one wire can only handle so much total bandwidth. I took the high-capacity (8 gb, I think) SIMM card out of the camera to load the pics into my computer, and I only see the ones from January-June 2019(I had erased anything older before our trips last year). The card is elderly but has worked reliably the entire time I've had it. I don't know its age, as it was given to me, used, in 2016. I still see the pictures on my camera. I already tried unplugging the charger end of my USB charging cable and seeing if it would show up as an external drive. It didn't. Anyone have any ideas on how I can access and upload them? The wireless connection is working on all other systems and devices. My laptop works fine with a direct ethernet connection. So I ran Norton and Malware and defragged. Used Manage Computer checked all of the devices to make sure the drivers and software were all up to date. I ran updates and repair on devices that I thought could be related and it worked for a few hours then disconnected again. Trying a number of different strategies (updating, rebooting, etc.) an error message came up that said: Intel(r) Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260.No driver found. Also: Network Controller. No driver found And: Bluetooth Peripheral Device. No driver found The last two have nothing in Properties that tells me who provides them or anything useful. This is a long way of asking if there is a fix that I'm missing, if it is more likely that the wireless adapter/card has died, and if so who would be the best place/resource to fix it. If it doesn't show up (it should be the 1st adapter listed), you have a hardware problem, which could be a dead or disconnected card. If it shows up with a warning (yellow exclamation point) next to it, it could still be a hardware problem, but it could also be a missing or corrupted driver. Try right clicking on it, selecting Properties, and see if you can get it to update the driver. If it does show up and it says the device is working properly, you may have a network configuration problem. You can get to that through the Network and Sharing Center, also accessible from the Control Panel or by right-clicking on the Network icon on your desktop. Network configuration problems can be a pain to troubleshoot under Windows 7. As an aside, Microsoft support for Windows 7 ends next Tuesday, so you might consider upgrading to Windows 10. Trying a number of different strategies (updating, rebooting, etc.) an error message came up that said: Intel(r) Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260?No driver found. Also: Network Controller? No driver found And: Bluetooth Peripheral Device? No driver found The last two have nothing in Properties that tells me who provides them or anything useful. This is a long way of asking if there is a fix that I?m missing, if it is more likely that the wireless adapter/card has died, and if so who would be the best place/resource to fix it. The following is an excerpt from a page on my website on the matter: Getting by on Windows 7 Running Windows 7 in 2020 likely means that there may be other aspects of your PC that could use a tune-up, especially when it comes to security. If you can't upgrade right away, here is a list of priorities: - Ensure you have a complete backup, ideally more than one; one of which stays offline or in the cloud, such as Backblaze . - Use a highly rated antivirus program. Bitdefender is a good choice for Windows 7 and up. Manually run a complete system scan. - Don't use Internet Explorer. Here's why. Chrome is fine, but Firefox offers much better privacy and tracking protection. - Keep your wireless router's firmware up to date. - Use a standard account (as opposed to an administrator account) for everyday tasks, while switching temporarily to an administrator account when needed. Make sure your administrator account has a strong password. This would be a good time to upgrade to a quality password manager if you haven't already. - Disable or remove features you don?t need, especially Java, Adobe Flash Player, and add-ons of questionable utility. (1) If you have older software you don't need to upgrade to the latest versions IF you you are ok running them in a virtual machine.?? Oracle's VirtualBox is a free product that is very simple to install.? (though you would need a valid Windows X license for whatever OS is on the virtual machine).? For some older software I'm running a Windows 7 32bit in the virtual environment so that a company can use some software that couldn't run on Windows 10 64 bit pro. ?? Consider it like the old "Windows XP Mode" that came with Windows 7 when it was first introduced. But the quickbooks that Mik mentioned might have been able to run in the virtual machine. (2) And if you have a larger company and want to push out an image of Windows 10 to the workstations (as long as they are less than 6 years old and have a UEFI option), Microsoft has produced their WDS (Windows deployment services) software in Windows server alongside AIK in order to customize and create images that you can then boot off of the network and clone machines.?? I've had a lot of luck upgrading machines in rapid succession this way.? Start to finish I can clone a system in about 30 minutes.? If you have questions about it, feel free to reach out to me. (3) I had a lot of problems upgrading Windows 7 roaming profiles to Windows 10 roaming profiles (for larger business that use roaming profiles).? There doesn't appear to be any conversion program for them, so I ended up writing some scripts that did that sort of thing for me.? So just be aware if you use roaming profiles its a challenge dealing with Windows 7 to Windows 10 conversions.?? There are other options such as UE-V for those that have a subscription and can get access to it, or even folder redirection if you have an active directory.? And rumor has it that Microsoft wants to do away with roaming profiles altogether. Good luck! It is a Johnson Controls system. No other applications are ever run on it, just the one Java program (which as far as I can tell only runs under MS-Windows, despite being written in Java). Is it worth the trouble to upgrade this VM? I have no clue if the Java program will even run under MS-Windows 10, and I suspect if we want to run a newer version of the Java application, we would need to have Johnson Controls upgrade the firmware in the HVAC, which would probably cost $3,000 or some such (that is what it cost when we had things upgraded from the MS-Windows XP version...). It might actually be cheaper to replace the HVAC control system with something *other* than Johnson Controls. Eg pull the Johnson Controls "box" and replace it with a Raspberry Pi or something. -- Robert Heller -- 978-544-6933 Cell: 413-658-7953 Deepwoods Software -- Custom Software Services http://www.deepsoft.com/ -- Linux Administration Services heller at deepsoft.com -- Webhosting Services From matthew at crocker.com Thu Jan 16 01:35:50 2020 From: matthew at crocker.com (Matthew Crocker) Date: Thu, 16 Jan 2020 01:35:50 +0000 Subject: [Hidden-tech] VM MS-Windows 7 upgrade: necessary or worth bothering? The end of support for Windows 7 means just two things: You will no longer receive security updates from Microsoft, and you may not be able to get drivers for newer hardware. The second of these clearly does not apply here, and, unless you expect to surf the Web and/or retrieve your emails from within the VM, neither does the first. Physically, a VM is just a file that contains a bootable image of a working computer environment. If you are worried that the environment within the VM might be contaminated by malware when you use it, backup the VM file(s) *before* you start the VM. Then, when you need to use the VM again, restore a copy from the backup to work with. That way, you will always be guaranteed an uncontaminated environment in the exact state it was when you backed it up. You might find that required Windows 10 drivers are not available. If you do choose to upgrade, always create a system image, not just a backup, from which you can if necessary restore your whole system. My preferred upgrade process is to install a new disk drive and keep the old one as a back-up. It'd good opportunity to get a larger drive, and they do wear out over time. Install Windows 10 on the new drive, then install all your applications and copy files, shortcuts, and bookmarks that you've saved on a CD or USB. This takes a while but is worth it. You avoid carrying over old detritus from your previous install, avoid conflicts, and possibly improve the speed. ----- Larry Kuttner Information Technology Manager Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA) 20 Federal Street, Greenfield, MA 01301 413.774.6051 ext. 12 . lkuttner at nesea.org . www.nesea.org Join me at BuildingEnergy Boston 2020 on Monday & Tuesday, March 23 & 24! I went from Windows 7 to 8 a few years ago, and it rendered my copy of Quickbooks inoperable. I had to buy a new copy for a couple hundred bucks. If you have any older software on your machine that you absolutely rely on, check the version you have and Google whether it will still work on Win10. It's OK with documents that are straight text, but the more I formatted, the less it worked. I gave up on it. I use Pages on my Mac, which reads and writes Word files fairly well, and on my PC, I bought a copy of the stand-alone (non-cloud-based) MS Office. I don't know if they still offer that option. That's pretty unusual, so it may well be just a demo copy that you are supposed to then pay for- which Micro$oft demands all the manufacturers install. These demo copies tend to be annoying and spend a lot of time hitting you up to setup and subscribe. I usually delete the whole thing immediately, then decide if I want to use a "real" copy of Word- which is relatively cheap if you don't buy the whole Office package- or go with Libreoffice as others have suggested. My experience with newer versions of Libreoffice is that it's reputation for incompatibility is overblown. If your documents don't use complicated tables or macros, it will likely be just fine. There is a free Word "viewer" program you can download from Microsoft to check what you're documents look like (Google 'doc viewer'), or I'd be happy to print out a copy from an official Word install, just so you can check it. cheers, James From alan at 8wheels.org Wed Jan 22 19:23:43 2020 From: alan at 8wheels.org (Alan Frank) Date: Wed, 22 Jan 2020 14:23:43 -0500 Subject: [Hidden-tech] Connected Online Backup Message-ID: I recently got a new computer to replace an old one. I have been using Connected Online Backup (also called Autonomy and at one point part of Iron Mountain) for many years and it has served me well. I would like to move my account to my new computer. The instructions say to log on to my account at https://ecommerce.connected.com/ssws/MyAccount/main.aspx. However, when I try this, I get a message "An Unexpected error occurred. Please try again later. If the problem persists, please contact support." Just in case the issue was a wrong password (not a good message if it is), I tried the password reset link, but did not get an e-mail. I tried their support form and got no confirmation or response. They are apparently a subsidiary of MicroFocus and/or HP. I tried the support lines for those companies where at least I was able to talk to a person, but they were unable to help; I am not sure they had ever heard of Connected. Any suggestions on what I can try next, other than either the BBB or badmouthing them on FB and see if they notice? --Alan From wfoxmyn at gmail.com Sat Jan 25 04:42:28 2020 From: wfoxmyn at gmail.com (wendy foxmyn) Date: Fri, 24 Jan 2020 23:42:28 -0500 Subject: [Hidden-tech] Fwd: New job opportunities with City of Northampton, MA In-Reply-To: <71.FF.17440.AE5CB2E5@aa.mta1vsmtp.cc.prd.sparkpost> References: <71.FF.17440.AE5CB2E5@aa.mta1vsmtp.cc.prd.sparkpost> Message-ID: ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Date: Fri, Jan 24, 2020 at 11:36 PM Subject: New job opportunities with City of Northampton, MA To: City of Northampton, MAHEALTH DATABASE MANAGER Health Department | Northampton, MA Position description: The database manager position will be located within the office of the Northampton Health Department for the City of Northampton with support from the IT department. It had an unlicensed copy of Windows 7. I also had an older workstation. My regular workstation had a licensed Windows 7. So I pulled it off the LAN, grabbed the license, and upgraded the SSD to Windows 10. I was then able to boot from the drive over USB on my workstation (which sadly can not accommodate two drives). Turns out the workstation boots up much faster on the SSD through the USB than it did on the older Windows 7 SATA drive. -- Bram Moreinis 845-750-2412 (txt) - - - - This email was composed on a mobile device and may have been dictated. Or look into the trial modes. If it's an ongoing need, I believe WishList would give you better bang for your bucks.
