If you are into DIY -- explore a Rasperry PI based NAS
There are variety of online detailed FAQ about how to build one.

On quite review, they appear to be all based on using the 4 USB to 
connect the drives, which
would effect the absolute speed -- but I've not looked further.

Might be a good group project ;)
