Depending on where you go and if you are going to multiple countries it would most likely be cheaper to get a SIM card from a local carrier and pay as you go for cell service. This means you have a new number while abroad and maybe that's something you don't want to do, but my experience has been that cell service in Europe is so much cheaper than here that it makes no sense to use a US based service international plan while there. (You also need an unlocked cell phone).
