Needing it to make sense, and not get too confusing should I start getting traffic, and not completely sold on mailchimp yet, so also open to other options? I wanted to share my experience. I found out after October, about Gaiahost ending the company, and I read that I could send an email request to support at gaiahost.coop to join the queue to be transferred to Be Cooperative. I was patient, and waited for confirmation. It took a week or so, and I was a bit nervous, but I received an email from Be Cooperative requesting that I complete my profile for an account with them, which I have done. I now have received confirmation from Be Cooperative that I am in Be Cooperative's transfer queue, and my account at Gaiahost continues to operate without trouble while I wait. Gaiahost has maintained my domains for many years. Since 2016 I have hosting from Siteground, because I like having access to a cPanel, but left my domain registration, and email with Gaiahost, and my domain is pointed to my Siteground site. I preferred to have my email and my domains registered with a trusted friend. This has served me well for many years, and I believe in using services in the local community as much as possible. He provides a tech support phone number but requested that people don't use it unless their service is down. He is in the midst of processing 800 customers. I haven't communicated directly with Charles about the transfer. I am simply conveying my experience, and what I've learned from statements on the website here: https://gaiahost.coop/help#status I have known Charles Strader for years, and he is a wonderful person, and someone who I have always known to go out of his way to provide good service, and be extra helpful. Though I don't know the details of the decision to end Gaiahost, I have read his statement about ending the company. I also have witnessed (I have been a web designer for many years, and have helped a few of Gaiahost's clients) that he seems to have bent over backwards to provide backwards compatibility for websites that are long overdue for updates to current code. It seems to me that for multiple reasons, Gaiahost's business model has experienced adversity due to the frequent disruption which we often experience in our web design world. It also seems to me that here in Western Mass we are a community, and we care about community. All of us are human beings after all, and sometimes run into adversity. Charles has always been helpful and understanding, at times when I had my own business challenges. Communities that are good to live in take care of each other, and help each other in hard times. I would suggest that knowing Charles, I am sure he is doing his best, and working as hard as he can to set all to rights, and is working though the transitions. For anyone with time sensitive needs, I would suggest sending an email to support at gaiahost.coop, explaining the time sensitive necessity. Here is a link on Be Cooperative's site for a transfer from Gaiahost to Be Cooperative: http://be.coop/account/cart.php. Here is a support email address for be.cooperative: support at be.coop In my own experience, I have only ever sought legal action through small claims court twice in my life. The only times I have done it were when I knew I was dealing with someone who I couldn't trust. Charles is one of the most trustworthy people I have ever met. I will also say that small claims court, although I was successful, took so much time that I could have worked at McDonalds, and earned the money quicker than it took to get it back through court. I have at least one client who has successfully transferred away through Gaiahost's process, and I was able to assist, post-transfer, with display issues at the new hosting, which did not offer backwards compatibility for the site which had outdated code. Feel free to ask any questions you might have. I can do my best to help. The one that is not is at Hover, where it has been for many years. I had some domains previously at GoDaddy, but moved them all to Google because I found Google much easier to deal with. The one at Hover started out at Network Solutions nearly 25 years ago, and my experience with NS made me appreciate the importance of a reliable and well run registrar. My needs are pretty simple and I can't claim to be particularly knowledgeable about domain management. I find Google's interface to be well documented and easy to work with. I don't know what support they provide for someone with large numbers of domains to manage. When the domain at Hover there comes up for renewal in a few years, I may move it to Google too, just to keep everything together, but don't see any pressing reason to do so at this time. I consider both Google and Hover to be highly reliable. Jan Werner __________ Lisa Hoag via Hidden-discuss wrote: > Thanks for all the great suggestions, everyone :) One more question. I?m ready to get on the phone with go daddy again, if needed, but if they are not the problem or solvers, I?d pay a reasonable amount for a local tech person to fix this: The first thing I find confirms your reports. I get a server error at fambizpv.com. Specifically, When I hover over the link in the search results, the URL that shows up in the status bar is fambizpv.com. When I click on the link, the URL in the address bar is the same, fambizpv.com. But if I copy that link in the search results, and then paste, I get the following: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjk4_n9vL_mAhVRzlkKHUvpAm8QFjACegQIBBAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Ffambizpv.com%2F&usg=AOvVaw2OEMgEAOPkdGiw8JJsPoa9 When I click on the link in the search results for irabryck.com, I get the pill mill site. Again, if I enter the URL myself, again, using private browsing, I get the proper site. When I hover over the link, the URL in the status bar shows up like this: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjk4_n9vL_mAhVRzlkKHUvpAm8QFjAAegQIARAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Firabryck.com%2F&usg=AOvVaw07e6tVudvWD76Bp5dt4cQu If I copy and paste the URL, it's exactly the same. When I follow that link, I briefly see irabryck.com in the address bar, then it redirects to the pill mill site:https://itashopo.com/search.html?key=cialis&t=dec107_100 So the server error behavior on fambiz.com seems problematic. I would normally treat that straightforwardly like it's what it appears to be, a server error. But the fact that typing in the proper URL works, doesn't make sense in the straightforward error scenario. Clicking on the link should bring you to precisely the same place as typing the URL. The fact that one works, and the other doesn't tells me there's something unseen happening. With irabryck.com, it's obvious that there's a malicious redirect occurring. I don't know how you get GoDaddy to responsibly attend to this. Maybe some of this information will help. If a technician isn't getting you somewhere, I might ask to speak to a supervisor until you get someone responsive. The fact that those links come up at the top of the search results when I search for your name, or family business center, shows that this is not a SEO issue. That's the correct behavior. What happens when you click on the link is not. Here are some tools: https://geekflare.com/website-malware-scanning/ Exactly which you can use depends a lot on the web server and setup in use A easy test (if you can do it) is to run a diff between your wordpress install and the original wordpress sources -- there are file corruptions that can be hacked into your side that only show up when coming from a search like google. They show up when comparing the original files and usually look like either: 1) and include at the bottom of the WP index.php or wp-config.php 2) messy Javascript at the start of theme files -- often to the extreme right where you might miss them. If so, I?m betting it is invalid due to the likely fictitious domain name ?websitename.com?. You?ll probably need to insert the actual domain name into the link. And also make sure there is an valid SSL certificate installed for the domain name. ?favicon.ico? is just an icon file which displays in the browser to the left of the URL field, so either you?d need to confirm that the .ico file actual exists in that location and if not, delete it from the site template. In addition, but less critically, we need expertise in managing a Meraki network setup that includes two physical locations as well as the Azure environment. The sysadmin would only be responsible for the elements of the Meraki networks that can be managed in the cloud. That is, there would be no need to work on-site (the locations are on the Cape and in Northern California). So, all the work is cloud-based. Other skills that would be helpful: ?* SQL Server DBA ?* Parallels Remote Application Server ?* Client-server 4D (that's a long shot) ?* Experience with PCI and/or HIPAA compliance The Azure environment includes about 16 Windows 2016 VM's (IIS website & back-end systems, in both production and development environments), a Meraki virtual MX device, all the networking and security elements you'd expect (e.g. VPN's), and some other bits and pieces. We need the networking to get cleaned up, security tightened up, regular Windows Updates and other software updates managed, and backups properly set up and managed. Also, help in reducing the ongoing Azure costs, as much as is possible. Some degree of "customer support" would be needed. That is, in case of urgent issues arising--especially in the production environment--we'd hope to be able to get help as quickly as possible. Of course, it's understood that an individual won't be as available as a full-service IT provider. Most of the direction would come from me, from one other developer, and occasionally from the business owner. Happy Holidays!
