They're really different. BusinessWire, PRNewswire, and their
competitors push press releases in bulk to large numbers of
journalists. Janal's service <http://snipurl.com/nv6p > brings
reporter requests for sources to the sources. When a reporter is
specifically looking for a source, you can get into A-list media;
this has gotten me covered in the NY Times, USA Today, Entrepreneur,
Woman's Day, and even at least one AP news feed. It's also very cheap
at $99/month. I think BW is like $700 to send a single press release.
The wire services send press releases to reporters who may or may not
have a need for your story, but you play the law of averages and hope
a few places pick them up.
There's also a third model of places that post your press release
online but don't actually distribute it.
