David,
to do this you could just use standard online web store software, one
that is suited for selling more then just goods (I would recommend zen
cart).
That way you could set it up to take more then just one type of payment.
(pay pal, Google check out, credit cards, Cash on delivery or check)
there would already be a very strong schema, for keeping track of
registration, and details of attendees.
I am thinking that you could simply set up a few 'products' that would
sell registration for the whole or any part of the event.
having had my hand in the creation of quite a few on line stores and
also havening done event organization my self this seems a very easy way
to go.
the other good thing about using soft ware like this you are also ready
to sell recordings of the conference talks on you site afterwards for
any one who wants them.
