[Hidden-tech] DVD to MS Movie?

Hi Hidden Techies...

Here's another tech question for the think tank to solve...

I have DVD recordings of me speaking. I would 
like to be able to pull clips from it to use 
online. I can probably to what I need in <gasp> 
MS Movie Maker, but I need a way to get the video 
OFF the DVD into a usable format.

Any one know how? Anyone have a suggestion for 
better <and cheap> video editing software?
