[Hidden-tech] printer advice

I would like to try a laserjet color, but from what I see the supplies are
expensive.

I have had a laserjet B&W since 1992. First with HP 3P version that had an
issue with the scanning board. Had to replace them every 3 years or so.
Then carts got difficult to find, and refilling my old ones became messy.

So I got a Brother 5820 (I think) around 2007.

Issues. It still works! Has two issues tho; the paper feed for the lower,
larger, tray failed 3 or 4 years ago, no amount of cleaning rollers or
other stuff has helped; and a small plastic piece that pushes the side of
the paper has broken. A small bit of crazy glue would probably fix it

Cost. The standard carts will print about 3000 sheets, the extra size cart
is advertised to do 10,000 sheets. That's TWO BOXES of paper!

To add to that, a few years ago I wondered how the printer "knew" it was
out of toner when the previous printing was almost perfect.

What I found was a tiny lens on the right hand side of the cart. The design
is that some laser light shines inside the cart to a receptor on the other
side. Of course a full, or acceptable amount of toner dust in the cart
intercepts this light, telling the printer it has enough toner. Sneaky!

Placing a piece of black tape over this lens extends the life of the larger
size cart by another ream of paper.

For about $170, I got my money's worth.

SInce Mik chimed in about Laser's and being someone of like mind with a
HP tilt, I'll add my experience:

I had a HP LaserJet for well past normal life (10 + years) so recently
some color print issues move me to get a new one -- I went with HP Color
LaserJet Pro MFP M477 -- at over 50% off list

So far, works great and integrates with rest of the systems here very
nicely (various desktops, MAC and PC) and ipads and phones

Get on the HP email list and you'll get plenty of discount offers, also
watch Staples for stock sellout offers, they are usually just new units
that are a bit less popular.

You'll be bothered you didn't replace it sooner - I was.
