Yes, people don't realize how much trouble domains can be until they get 
into trouble. We (Itabix) became a domain registrar for all these 
reasons and a bunch more - so many times our clients lost their domain 
or lost access to it because their "friend" or web developer was the 
owner of record, or they didn't get the notification so didn't renew it, 
or because they no longer had access to the registered email address so 
they would have to do a long convoluted fax request to get control 
again. We make a whopping dollar and some change per year on a domain 
but it's worth it because we can manage and protect the domain, and also 
have instant access to things like nameservers and domain forwards.
