Apparently Hughesnet is 25 Mbps download and 3Mbps upload. DSL is usually between 768Kbps and 1.5 Mbps so satellite should be much faster. Speed of DSL is highly dependent on your distance from the CO (Central Office, the switch where your phone line separates from the main line), if you're far enough away it will either be very slow or at around 18,000 feet away you won't be able to get it. Also, not all CO's support DSL. As mentioned, the two problems with satellite are latency and weather. Latency is very high so it's fine for watching movies (all one way) but there is noticeable lag time after you click when browsing websites (between .7 and 1.2 seconds compared to around .01 to .07 seconds for DSL, depending) and terrible for time-synchronous applications (video calls/conferencing or online gaming).
