I would definitely use an off-the-shelf but tweakable product. DO NOT try to create your own shopping cart. It would be hundreds of hours of work and probably not any better than what's out there. Like Victoria, I'm pretty happy with Woo Commerce. It has its flaws, but I can live with them.
