A service manual for this unit is available here:

There’s a lot that can go wrong in 45 years on a mechanical beast like this!

>From your description, you might check if the brake band on the take up motor is disengaging properly. This is a metal band with a cork surface that engages around a flywheel to stop the take up motor.

Take the back off the unit, and see if the brake band is lifting fully from the brake flywheel. It’s possible the solenoid that lifts the brake band is not engaging properly. A disassembly, clean, and re-lube might do the trick.

There are also several relays that control voltage to the motors or brakes. Any of these could have dirty contacts.

With no tape reels on the unit you can lift up the right tension arm and cycle the machine through rewind, play, fast forward, etc. You might be able to feel if there’s drag on the take up reel hub.

Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Tony

I picked this up for $75 and it sort of works, except that I think the take-up reel motor is not functioning correctly. For one thing, fast forward does not work at all, and in play mode, the take-up reel does not appear to be pulling the tape through with sufficient power. Does anyone have any experience fixing these or know anyone who does? Thanks.

David
