Haven't used OOMA, but for many years, my regular home phone has been running VOIP through an OBI 200 box connected to my home network. For a while, I used Time Warner Cable VOIP, and then VOIPo, but much prefer the OBI system, which runs through Google Voice. Among other things, that lets me check missed calls and retrieve voicemail from a cell phone or through a web browser. The OBI control panel also allows me to check on device status and administer it through a web browser. I have wired Ethernet and voice quality is as good as POTS ever was in my house, even during heavy network usage, but I suspect that a VOIP connection over WiFi could be spotty unless you have a strong signal. While I haven't tried it, OBIHAI sells a dongle that plugs into the USB port on the OBI 200 to use it on WiFi networks (as does OOMA). An OBI 200 costs less than $50 on Amazon, and the 802.11 AC dual band WiFi adapter about $30. Calls within the U.S. and Canada are free on Google Voice and they claim to have the lowest international rates of any carrier ($.06/minute to mobile phones in France).
