If you buy a Sanddisk Pro card, it comes with a free recovery program that works quite well. You have to get another card but you can always use more.  Rikk Rikk Desgres  Pinehurst Pictures & Sound  pinehurstpictures.com

Last year, I had the same problem with a portable hard drive, which a photographer had formatted for Mac (in fact, I think he formatted it for both Mac and Windows). I couldn't read anything on my Windows machine. Must have spent an hour with the Seagate help desk, to make the drive usable again. They recommended that it just be formatted for Windows, and that the photographer convert the photos before reloading them on my drive. Fortunately, he doesn't delete anything, so he was able to re-load in a format that I could read.

This isn't exactly your situation, but it is similar. If you re-format the card, will you lose the photos (as I did)? Perhaps a computer store can copy them onto a new medium...even a flash drive that is only formatted for your reader....?

A colleague has a 16GB SD card that, when inserted, no longer shows a recognizable filesystem (it asks you to format it on both Windows and Mac). Does anyone have any suggestions for how to recover data? These are vacation photos: probably not worth a lot of money, but of significant sentimental value.

Thanks!
