Motorola phones used standard 5V chargers but they kept the mini USB style socket long after nearly all other manufacturers standardized on micro USB. You can still buy Motorola branded mini-USB adapters on Amazon for about $5. But any standard phone charger with a mini-USB connector should work, as should any micro-USB phone charger with a micro-to-mini USB adapter. In fact, Motorola used to make those adapters - I have several around which I use for charging older MP3 players with Mini USB sockets. If the phone rejected the charger your friend tried at Staples, it might not have been a standard 5V charger - 12V chargers for external hard drives often use mini-USB connectors and the "experts" at Staples might not know the difference.
