I have a "range extender" (a.k.a. "network extender") on the way to me from Verizon Wireless. This happened after several tech support calls to VZW, a new SIM card, etc. didn't help. Here is a link to the user's manual of the one they're sending me: https://www.verizonwireless.com/dam/support/pdf/network_extender_user_manual.pdf It plugs into a DSL-modem or cable-modem-router and creates a mini cell tower -- so I think it's the same or similar to what David K. has suggested. It seems to deal only with calls, not data; extending the range of the wireless router function would be a different kind of device. There seems to be a nominal price of $500 and an actual retail of $250 at VZW stores. A third-party VZW store told me I could get an additional $150 off = $100, but in the end, the tech support person I had talked to the most said they'd send it for free, since I seem to be in a marginal coverage area. (The problem I was experiencing most was that either I sounded garbled to the person I was talking too, or they would stop hearing me all together.)
