Hi Karen,

You might try GIMP, a free, opensource image editing program, which you can download here.
https://www.gimp.org/downloads/

It works on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and later.
If you have an older version of OS X, you can download it from the "Older Downloads" link on the above page — though you might have to do some research to determine which version would match to your older OSX. Hopefully yours is later than 2009.
