I ported my landline to Google Voice and then used an Obihai device to allow me to make and receive free calls anywhere I plug it in as well as forward to cell, etc. Obihai relies on functionality of Google Voice that allows you to make free calls but there’s not guarantee that it will always be supported. I have however been using it for three years now and not paying for calls other than the initial $40 for the Obihai box. What I also love about Google Voice having the number is getting transcripts of my voicemails emailed to me.
