[Hidden-tech] Discussion platform/project manager suggestion?

HI, folks,

I've been looking for a good platform that will enable a group of people to
collaborate on projects and potentially revise documents together. *The key
function is as a threaded discussion list* except that most discussion list
and social media platforms don't allow group collaborative editing of e.g.
Word or PowerPoint documents. Because of this limitation, I don't think
Facebook or LinkedIn groups or Yahoogroups makes sense. Also, I want the
platform to push out notifications when there's new content, or new
activity on content that someone has already participated in.

At the moment, there are only six people involved, but it could easily grow
to include several hundred or even several thousand.

Our own Mitch Anthony suggested using Basecamp, but since this project will
not be a direct revenue-producer, I'm looking for something that's either
no-cost or very cheap (like $2.50 or $5/month.

But Mitch got me Googling.

The features I'm looking for:
ESSENTIAL:

   - Discussions organized into threads
   - Push notifications (email and/or RSS) when there's a new thread or a
   new comment on a thread that someone has previously posted on
   - Member directory page where people can post bios, photos,
   capabilities, and link out to their own site


NICE TO HAVE

   - Document markup (could be in conjunction with Google Docs, doesn't
   necessarily have to be built in--but nicer if it is)
   - Integrated videoconferencing
   - Calendar functions for group meetings (with automatic timezoning for
   each user)
   - Calendar tracking for individual users who have events that may or may
   not take place (for example, applying to speak at a conference—treating
   each as a project with the stages of application, shortlist, selection,
   materials submission, program delivery, etc.)

Among the contenders:

So--do any of you have experience with any of these (or with competitors in
that same very low to zero price bracket( for doing this sort of thing?
What's your experience and what would you recommend?
