Hi Simon, Anthony Paul does a great talk on Organizing Your First Website Usability Test. It looks like it wasn't recorded at the two conferences I went to where he presented it, but you can find his slides here: http://www.slideshare.net/anthonydpaul/organizing-your-first-website-usability-test He recommends Try My UI as a testing platform, since it lets you control how the site is mocked up and which pages are accessible, as well as recording audio and offering "prompts" for tasks users should try. Doing these things remote is useful since you don't have to get your volunteers all to one place. https://www.trymyui.com/ My experience is limited - I've been a tester for a beta product all of once, and when I did so I just used QuickTime to record a screencapture and narrated my thoughts as I moved around the application. Hope that helps!
